The Swan Plant (Gomphocarpus physocarpus)
The Swan Plant is best known as the biological engine behind the Monarch butterfly. While often grown for its beauty, it serves a critical ecological purpose in gardens.
Key Features:
The "Swans": The plant gets its name from its distinctive, inflated seed pods. When the stem curves, these pale green, spiky "balloons" resemble a swan floating on water.
The Monarch Host: It is the primary food source for Monarch caterpillars. The caterpillars eat the leaves not just for nutrition, but defense; the plant contains cardiac glycosides, which makes the caterpillars poisonous to predators.
Garden Caution: While beautiful, the plant produces a milky white sap when a stem is broken. This sap is toxic and can be very painful if it gets into your eyes, so it is best handled with gloves, especially around children.
