📢 New 12-Month Prescriptions – What You Need to Know

From 1 February, some customers may be eligible to have their regular, long-term, stable medicines prescribed for up to 12 months.

Why this change?
This update aims to:

🟢 Reduce barriers to access for people with stable, long-term health conditions

🟢 Reduce the need for frequent prescriber visits or prescription requests

🟢 Free up prescriber time to focus on patients with more complex care needs

Important things to know:

🟢 The decision to issue a 12-month prescription rests solely with the prescriber. Pharmacists cannot determine the length of supply.

🟢 Eligibility criteria are set by each practice — check with your prescriber to see if you qualify.

🙂 Even with a 12-month prescription, medicines will be dispensed in 3-month lots, as required by legislation. You cannot collect all 12 months at once.

🙂 If you need to pay a prescription charge, you only pay once at the first dispensing, not on repeats (unless the medicine is unfunded or partially funded).

🟢 There is no change to the dispensing of restricted supply medicines and controlled drugs (including ADHD medications). These will continue to be dispensed monthly or more frequently, as required by law.
