Workplace cancer risks are more common than most people realise.

A 2021 WorkSafe survey found that 58% of New Zealand workers are exposed to at least one carcinogen at work, with solar UV radiation being the second most common. These exposures contribute to nearly one-third of work-related harm and roughly 650 deaths annually from cancer and respiratory diseases.

With cancer diagnoses projected to skyrocket by 50% over the next two decades, protecting workers from preventable exposure has never been more critical.

Is your workplace doing enough to manage UV risk?

Here's what happens when workplaces prioritise skin health: Workers don't just get protection at work, they take those habits home. They start checking their skin regularly. They teach their families about sun safety. They catch changes early.

One workplace program creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond the job site. And ultimately? It saves lives.

Chelsea’s business partner (aka her husband) had the opportunity to tour the new Cancer Centre in New Plymouth, and it’s an amazing facility for the Taranaki community.

We’re proud to have played a small part, donating towards a chemotherapy chair to support patients and their families.

It means a lot to give back to the communities we work in every day. Huge credit to the Taranaki Health Foundation and everyone who brought this to life.

Chelsea recently attended the NZ HR Awards, celebrating some incredible work in workplace wellbeing across the country. She was proud to attend alongside New Plymouth District Council, who were recognised as finalists in the Wellbeing category for their Skin Health Program, delivered in partnership with Skin Aware.

This recognition reflects the genuine commitment NPDC has made to protecting their people and leading the way in workplace health. We’re incredibly proud to support their journey and to see skin health being recognised on a national stage.

We’re lucky to have experts like Phillipa on the road with us, and when it comes to protection, she keeps it simple. Her go-to tip? Don’t rely on sunscreen alone.

“Remember your sunsmart accessories! Don’t get caught out in the sun without a hat, sunnies, scarf and best of all, cover-all clothing. It’s the most reliable layer of defence you have against the harsh NZ sun.”
