My broccoli turned out amazing - just as big as cauliflower and soooo sweet. Loving having fresh broccoli again, though I wish it wouldnt all come on at the same time. The side shoots are coming on now so at least there will be broccoli for a while. The only challenge is the white butterfly and we'll beat it this year by covering it with frost cloth. It's worked to stop the birds pulling out the young peas in their first few days and they are already starting to flower. Peas for Christmas. Yummmmm

So glad I weeded the broccoli and cauliflower yesterday because after 27 mls of rain overnight it would have been too puggy to work in the gardens today. These plants have just "sat" until the last couple of weeks when its been a bit warmer. Its a good time of year to have them in the garden as they wont be affected by the white butterfly which is not around til late spring/summer. The older cauliflower are coming on nicely and we have already picked three - and eaten one:-) Its nice not to have them all at once as they so often do. On the other hand my broccoli didnt do it's usual and produce good secondary heads all winter, just a taste every now and then, but we didnt need the space, so I left them in. Its almost time to put in another crop so we have an almost continuous supply. They are "gross" feeders. In other words they need plenty of compost and they love a side dressing of animal manure.

How are your pumpkins doing? Ours went in late last season and didnt do very well. However yesterday I took two that had started to rot and fought to chop them up. They had really hard lumps in them - looked like they had calcified. Does anyone know what they might be? Anyway I managed to get 14 more pottles for the freezer and we still have plenty more fresh ones. I love pumpkin soup on cold winter days. I cook up onions and garlic, add pumpkin puree, coconut milk and nutmeg. Then thicken it a little with beaten eggs - dont let it boil or it will curdle. Serve with grated cheese - I use goat feta crumbled but before I gave up dairy we loved grated parmesan - and parsley. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Its almost that time again....spring planting time. This year the empty beds in the herb gardens are going to be used for corn and peas so I'm about to start the soil preparation - clearing the winter weeds. I'll plant peas seeds soon as they dont like it too hot and judging from the growth in the vege patch, its warm enough now for them to germinate. I love fresh peas for Christmas lunch!!! Baby peas and mint yummmmm. What's your favourite way to have peas?

Who likes cruciferous veges? What are those? They are the greens like broccoli, cauliflower, kale, watercress, radish and mustard greens - yummy spicy leaves for salads. My grandson used to love his "green trees" and "white trees" picked straight from the garden and lightly steamed.

Now is a good time to plant some in the garden with the white butterfly gone - so you wont have added protein! It's still warm enough to get them going before the winter. Mine survied the drought and are looking good, just staing to head up anad we have more seeedlings coming on.

They are another great family of vegetables for boosting your immune system, helping your lungs and digestive systems. They can neutralize toxins and block cancer causing agents.

My son used to be very sensitive to chlorine - used to kill "bugs" in our water supply, but also kills the good bugs in our bodies! It gave him a runny nose, sore throat and sore ears especially when he went swimming. 1 tablet of NeoLife's Cruciferous Plus stopped all that.

Contact me if you'd like to try it and stay safe.

When NeoLife introduced Flavonoid Complex to our businesses, I realised that I hardly even included them in my diet, yet they are so important for boosting our immune systems.

Blueberries are one of the most powerful foods in this family that we can include and they dont cause blood sugar issues. They help deal with the unfriendly viruses, bacteria, fungi that make their way into our bodies, and are working tirelessly behind the scenes protecting us, without our even being aware of it. We simply stay healthy!

Blueberries are only one member of the family though, and like families they are more effective when they work together. All berry fruit have similar properties. Having a variety of them is important, and strawberries, even though they are not officially classified as berries, make them all work better.

If, like me, you havent been including them in your diet up until now, you can call me for a supplement or even start growing them.

Cant wait for the boysenberry season - my favourites. What are yours?

Autumn is here already so it's time to boost up our immune systems. The most commonly eaten foods are potatoes and cabbage, bananas and apples. These are all great foods, but they are a bit short on immune boosting nutrients that are found in colourful foods.

I like to make sure I eat plenty of red, yellow and orange coloured foods, and I dont mean MandM's! I mean carrots, pumpkins (yummm pumpkin soup with lots of garlic season), tomatoes - (love Mum's tomato soup recipe) - capsicum - (the red type is my favourite), peaches ( straight off the tree or bottled for winter) How about red lettuce. I always choose to grow them for their extra immune boosting colours. Or maybe homemade sauerkraut from red cabbage - its purple really!
These foods will all help us to keep the winter ills at bay.

What are your favourite red, yellow or orange coloured veges or fruit and how do you like to use them?

Now is the time to get out into the gardens. I have just spread compost onto some of my beds - about 20 cubic metres!!! It was beautiful sweet smelling and loaded with soil microbes - worms and centipedes as well a fungi and bacteria. I spread it quite thickly - about 2cm and raked it in so the sun wouldnt damage the microbes and they could continue to condition the soil until planting time.
Get the children out there in the fresh air - weeding, getting dirt on their hands - that helps improve our internal microbiome just as compost helps the soil's microbiome.
Plan what you want to plant and order your seeds. Its almost time to get some germinating - salad greens/reds, brassicas like kale, broccoli and cauliflower, and onions.
OK so you dont like onions but they are very valuable food for your microbiome. Maybe try some red ones - they are milder, or perhaps spring onions.
Peas, beans and carrots can go straight into the ground as soon as it's warm enough and dry enough in your area.
Enjoy your garden

Beware! Organic certification means nothing! The farm I am working on is being audited today. The auditor has no interest in doing anything to help farmers with soil health, with stock health - and therefore might I add our own health that is dependent on it. All she is interested in is ticking the boxes that say we comply to Big Brother America's rules. Organic farmers are being hamstrung by a system that is well and truly broken. We need to know how our food is being grown.Buy Local. Know your farmer. Our health is declining rapidly - more cancer, more heart disease, more diabetes, more dementia, more autism.... Why? We have to be doing something that is causing this. Food is an obvious place to start.

It seems to be more important than ever to grow our own food to stay healthy. Organic may not be really organic. If Biogro can certify compost made from GMO fed chook poo, how can we trust that label? I am seeing evidence of how this "compost" causes death to the soil bacteria and hence the plant life... and that's after its been through cows fed on land that's been composted!

Just listened to a very interesting talk with Janet Podleski. They have written some amazing real foods cookbooks "Eat Shrink and be Merry" and in their first book - Looney Spoons - had recipes like Yabbadabba stew and Jurassic Pork. They make cooking and eating real foods a fun experience for the whole family!
