Pronation:
What is pronation?
It’s a term that is often used during treatment or when buying shoes. Pronation is a perfectly natural movement. It would be difficult to walk or run without pronation. Pronation provides shock absorption, internal rotation of your knee and forward rotation of your pelvis/hip.
Pronation is verb; it describes movement. In technical terms pronation describes a triplaner movement - a movement that crosses all three body planes, (frontal, sagittal and transverse) causing the foot to abduct, evert and dorsi flex. Pronation is enabled by the Subtalar joint, the joint that lays beneath the Talus. The Talus is the joint that allows you to move your ankle up and down (plantar and dorsi flex). The Subtalar joint enables your foot to pronate (roll in) and supinate (roll out)
Excessive Pronation:
As the term suggests, excessive pronation describes excessive movement at the subtalar joint. This is often caused by the shape of your foot, causing it to roll in to gain ground contact. This causes the joints on your foot, ankle, knee, hip/pelvis and back to move beyond their normal position resulting in abnormal biomechanical stress. This can cause muscular skeletal injury and pain including foot pain, knee pain, hip and back pain.
If you suffer from foot, ankle, knee, hip or back pain it may be caused by excessive pronation.
