With Valentine’s Day approaching, it’s a gentle reminder that aroha begins within.
Our bodies carry stress, injury, and the pace of everyday life, and taking time for mirimiri and romiromi can be a meaningful way to reconnect, release, and restore balance. He aroha tēnei mō te tinana me te wairua.
Appointments are available for both ACC-supported sessions following injury and privately paid sessions. Get in touch with us on 0225914580 to book in.
This week, choose care. Choose rest. Choose aroha. 🌿

This Waitangi Day, we honour our tīpuna Wi Akeake, who was Rangatira of Te Upokorehe.
Wi Akeake owned lands around Ōhiwa and Waiotahe, with one of his main kāinga at Te Arakōtipu, now known as Waiotahe Beach. Through oral accounts, we know he consulted with whānau here at home and travelled extensively throughout te motu to kōrero with descendants of Te Hapū Oneone before deciding to sign Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
The copy of Te Tiriti signed by Wi Akeake was brought to Ōpōtiki and signed on 27 May 1840, alongside six other rangatira.
At Aroha Rā, this connection is both personal and grounding. Te Tiriti speaks to hauora in its fullest sense, whakapapa, whenua, wairua, and the responsibility to care for future generations. We acknowledge the foresight, leadership, and whakaaro of our tīpuna, and we carry that legacy forward in our mahi today.

Rongoā Māori & Te Tiriti o Waitangi

One of the ways Te Tiriti is expressed in practice today is through the recognition of Māori models of wellbeing within public systems.

ACC formally recognises Rongoā Māori as a supported pathway of care for injury-related recovery, acknowledging that healing is not only physical, but also emotional, spiritual, and relational.

This recognition reflects key Te Tiriti principles:
Protection – of mātauranga Māori and traditional healing practices
Participation – ensuring Māori can access culturally grounded care
Partnership – working alongside Māori practitioners to support hauora

For us at Aroha Rā, this isn’t symbolic. It’s practical.
It means whaiora can receive support that aligns with their values, identity, and lived experience, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

On Waitangi Day, we acknowledge this as progress, and a responsibility.
Rongoā Māori is not an alternative on the margins.
It is an indigenous system of care, rooted in this whenua.

Te Tiriti & Hauora
Te Tiriti o Waitangi affirmed the right for Māori to retain and protect taonga, including traditional healing knowledge, whenua, reo, and ways of wellbeing.
Rongoā Māori is not a trend. It is an inherited system of care that has always existed here.
On Waitangi Day, we reflect on the importance of protecting indigenous healing practices so they can continue to support not only Māori, but all people of this land.
He taonga te oranga, wellbeing is precious.

Toot / Tutu / Tupakihi

Traditionally, the leaves were crushed or boiled and used as a poultice, or added to a bath to help ease bruising, sprains, and swollen joints.

You’ll often find tutu growing in open areas, along stream banks, and around bush margins. As we move into summer, its small clusters of berries begin to appear. Please remember that the berries and seeds are poisonous, do not consume them. They may look like tiny grapes, but they are not safe to eat.
