Whānau Harvesting 🌿Out on the whenua, our tamariki and rangatahi are learning the ways of our tipuna, harvesting rongoā and reconnecting with our mātauranga.
This is how we protect and preserve what has been passed down to us, by walking alongside our tamariki, guiding them, and trusting them to carry it forward in their own time.

Kumarahou has long been used in rongoā Māori for clearing the chest and soothing coughs. Traditionally it was brewed as a tea, but combining it with mānuka honey and berries makes a powerful syrup that stores longer and is easier for tamariki or adults to take.

Below is a balanced recipe that keeps close to traditional preparation while creating a stable syrup.

🌿 Kumarahou Cough Syrup Recipe

Ingredients:

1/2 cup Aroha rā Kumarahou tea
1 cup fresh or frozen blackberries
2 cups water
1 cup raw mānuka honey
1 slice fresh ginger (optional but very good for chest warmth)
Juice of ½ lemon (optional preservative and vitamin C)
Method

1. Make the Kumarahou decoction

- Place Kumarahou, blackberries, ginger and water in a pot.
- Bring to a gentle simmer.
- Simmer 20–25 minutes until the liquid reduces by about half.
This extracts the bitter saponins from the leaf that help loosen mucus.

2. Strain

- Strain through muslin or a fine sieve.
- Press the berries well to extract their juice.
You should end up with roughly 1 cup of strong liquid.

3. Make the syrup

- Allow the liquid to cool slightly (warm but not hot).
- Stir in 1 cup mānuka honey.
- Add lemon juice if using.
Do not add honey when boiling, heat damages the enzymes.

4. Bottle

- Pour into a sterilised glass bottle or jar.
- Store in the fridge.
Shelf life: 3–4 weeks refrigerated.

Dosage

Adults:
1 tablespoon up to 3–4 times daily

Children:
1 teaspoon up to 3 times daily

Why these ingredients work

Kumarahou – expectorant, helps clear mucus and chest congestion
Mānuka honey – antimicrobial, coats the throat
Blackberries – soothe inflammation and add natural antioxidants
Ginger – warming and improves circulation to the lungs
Lemon – immune support and preservation
💡 Optional variations

Add 1 teaspoon Horopito for its anti microbial properties

This Waitangi Day, we honour our tīpuna Wi Akeake, who was Rangatira of Te Upokorehe.
Wi Akeake owned lands around Ōhiwa and Waiotahe, with one of his main kāinga at Te Arakōtipu, now known as Waiotahe Beach. Through oral accounts, we know he consulted with whānau here at home and travelled extensively throughout te motu to kōrero with descendants of Te Hapū Oneone before deciding to sign Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
The copy of Te Tiriti signed by Wi Akeake was brought to Ōpōtiki and signed on 27 May 1840, alongside six other rangatira.
At Aroha Rā, this connection is both personal and grounding. Te Tiriti speaks to hauora in its fullest sense, whakapapa, whenua, wairua, and the responsibility to care for future generations. We acknowledge the foresight, leadership, and whakaaro of our tīpuna, and we carry that legacy forward in our mahi today.

Rongoā Māori & Te Tiriti o Waitangi

One of the ways Te Tiriti is expressed in practice today is through the recognition of Māori models of wellbeing within public systems.

ACC formally recognises Rongoā Māori as a supported pathway of care for injury-related recovery, acknowledging that healing is not only physical, but also emotional, spiritual, and relational.

This recognition reflects key Te Tiriti principles:
Protection – of mātauranga Māori and traditional healing practices
Participation – ensuring Māori can access culturally grounded care
Partnership – working alongside Māori practitioners to support hauora

For us at Aroha Rā, this isn’t symbolic. It’s practical.
It means whaiora can receive support that aligns with their values, identity, and lived experience, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

On Waitangi Day, we acknowledge this as progress, and a responsibility.
Rongoā Māori is not an alternative on the margins.
It is an indigenous system of care, rooted in this whenua.

Te Tiriti & Hauora
Te Tiriti o Waitangi affirmed the right for Māori to retain and protect taonga, including traditional healing knowledge, whenua, reo, and ways of wellbeing.
Rongoā Māori is not a trend. It is an inherited system of care that has always existed here.
On Waitangi Day, we reflect on the importance of protecting indigenous healing practices so they can continue to support not only Māori, but all people of this land.
He taonga te oranga, wellbeing is precious.
