After spending our whole lives working, retirement is when we can kick back, relax, and go with the flow, right?

Well, yes. However, sometimes when we go straight from working within a fixed schedule, to suddenly having all the freedom of retirement, we can feel directionless.

When this happens, our lives can go from feeling very full to very empty, and it’s hard!

Our advice is to establish a new routine in order to recreate the structure of work (without all the stress!). Find all the things that bring you joy, all your goals for retirement, and make a weekly schedule incorporating everything.

Most importantly, trust the process! Retirement may feel strange at first, but once you’ve settled into your new routine it’ll begin to feel normal.

So go, establish a routine, and find your balance!

In every Greenview apartment, you'll find emergency call buttons conveniently installed. Additionally, we provide you with a pendant that you can wear at all times. Both of these devices are connected to our on-site hospital nurse care system. In the event of an emergency, a trained member of our staff will respond promptly.

Living at Greenview offers you the best of both worlds: full independent living with the reassurance of extra support should you or your loved one require it. After forty odd years of work, the freedom that retirement grants can be a shock to the system.

While, of course, leaving work can be a relief, it can also leave us feeling overwhelmed. We’re just not used to that kind of flexibility!

Our advice? Embrace it.

Instead of feeling overloaded with possibility, think about all the times in your life when you wished for more time to do the things you love, and do those things!
Embrace the ability to modify your plans and be open to new experiences. Allow yourself the freedom to change direction, try new things, and adjust your goals and routines as needed.

Be kind to yourself, take it one step at a time, and let yourself go with the flow. And, most importantly, enjoy yourself. This is an exciting time of your life.

With all the free time that retirement grants, it's crucial to consider how you want to spend it.

Whether you want to focus on your relationships, or to focus on yourself, make sure that you find a balance between social engagement and solo time.

While maintaining social connections in retirement is important to maintaining good mental health, also consider the importance of solitude.

Solitude gives the opportunity for self-reflection, relaxation, and mindfulness — and it can be truly rejuvenating!

But of course, we don’t recommend spending all your time alone. Also try to seek connections with others, whether it be existing friends, family, or new relationships.

Retirement is an opportunity to get to know both yourself and others better. Balancing alone time with social interaction ensures a well-rounded retirement experience.
