Diabetes Foundation Aotearoa

Diabetes Foundation Aotearoa Working in partnership with the community to achieve better health for present & future generations.

For the latest information on our activities go to our Blog here https://www.diabetesfoundationaotearoa.nz/blog/ Our Vision statement is that "We want to prevent and reverse Diabetes - its prevalence and its damage - for Aotearoa New Zealand’s most high-risk communities". To do this, we have four supporting pou or pillars:

* Health & Wellness: We run programmes promoting health & wellness for people in the supportive environment of community and whānau. We consider Te Whare Tapa Whā principles of taha wairua/spiritual wellbeing, taha hinengaro/mental and emotional wellbeing, taha tinana/physical wellbeing and taha whānau/family and social wellbeing.

* Research: We undertake research, and co-design of high-quality community studies on diabetes to find ways to do things differently.

* Advocacy: We campaign for better equity and access to best practice treatment options. We share the experience of our community to all audiences acting for better outcomes for Diabetes in Aotearoa.

* Capacity Growth: We build capability for people and groups so our impact can extend through the community. We are building the capacity of our organisation to have more impact. We are based in Otara, and work closely with other organisations, including other NGOs, community groups, Primary Care, District Health Boards and government entities.

Getting ready for World Diabetes Day next week, Diabetes Foundation Aotearoa, MHT Diabetes Trust , Diabetes Christchurch and Diabetes Wellington have collaborated on several projects including a questionnaire to look more at the situation in workplaces in Aotearoa New Zealand in relation to diabetes. What is already in place for workers, what challenges are there, what help is needed, are among the questions. If you're a workplace (or worker with an interest in diabetes), it would be great if you could fill in (and share) this short, anonymous questionnaire https://forms.gle/t2siQfgpu6tumjNRA

This month in recognition of November's diabetes focus, we are releasing video conversations with three amazing people for whom diabetes is an important part of life. We are delighted to introduce this first in the series, where current Board member Graham King and past Board member Pat Spellman kōrero about Graham's diabetes journey. Pat and Graham cover a wide range of discussion, from diagnosis, living with diabetes, the history in the whanau, perspective as Māori, how important it is to share information, thinking about the future and much more.

Here's something we can all do for diabetes awareness. As part of the International Diabetes Federation World Diabetes Day campaign (November 14), there's a call to action letter template that can be filled out and sent to your national health representative and to the United Nations in Geneva to request that they do more to help achieve the World Health Organization (WHO) diabetes coverage targets by 2030. Diabetes Foundation Aotearoa is delighted to be working with the excellent people at Auckland Council offering training and support for a network of volunteer 'Different Dinners activators'. Activators receive training and resources to run teaching sessions in their communities for whanau, friends and contacts, with the aim of encouraging more plant based eating.

We are getting some amazing reports back about the difference being made by the Activators who have been through the training already, we are in AWE of what they are doing! Remaining places for training/support are limited and if you are interested in becoming a Different Dinners Activator, get in touch with Diana by emailing workplace@diabetesfoundationaotearoa.nz. To get more of an idea of the sorts of recipes being encouraged, there are some popular recipes to try at home here https://livelightly.nz/different-dinners-diabetes-foundation-recipe-book/

Thanks to Auckland Council for their innovative thinking and getting behind spreading the important message that eating more plants is great for health, prevention of diseases such as diabetes, and just as importantly, good for our environment.
