Trenchmate specialises in quality shoring solutions, we also now supply ground water treatment solutions through our Siltmate division. Our head office is based in Auckland, and from here we service the North & South Island, with satelite yards. Trenchmate is independently owned and operated, with no ownership affiliation to any pipe supplier or any general equipment hire firms. Trenchmate's sole function is to provide elite and specialised shoring equipment and assistance. We provide delivery options, onsite help, shield adjustment and advice. Trenchmate continues to exceed tough compliance, health and safety considerations, and in doing this we have created the strongest, safest and most versatile range of shoring solutions. Trenchmate shields and versa products, unlike one-off shields, are designed for compatibility to provide a range of solutions, you can use different strut widths, add extensions or additional shields to accommodate different requirements. Trenchmate Shields have continued to lead the way in the drainage and construction industry within New Zealand, with shields in use for over 15 years to date.

To celebrate his amazing 15 years at Trenchmate, we thought we’d run Rich Waratini through our Q&A. Rich is the go-to guy for the Central North Island, known for his down-to-earth approach, quick problem-solving, and knack for getting the right gear on site fast.

Q. What did you do before Trenchmate?
A. Drainlaying, hiring heavy machinery, and directional drilling.

Q. What’s your area of expertise or special interest?
A. I know trench shields and manhole boxes inside out – but I’m particularly interested in the Siltmate and GN products.

Q. What do you enjoy most about working here?
A. The fast pace, the variety, and building genuine relationships with my customers. I enjoy figuring out exactly what they need and finding ways to make it happen, especially utilising new products.

Q. Your customer service philosophy?
A. Listen carefully, understand the need, and get the right product to site asap! Always treat everyone with respect.

Q. One project you’re proud of?
A. All of them – big or small. Smaller jobs can take the most time and attention, and it’s rewarding helping customers see them through to the end.

Our Story

At Trenchmate, we’ve been designing, manufacturing and supplying superior shoring solutions nationwide to NZ construction companies . We are a NZ owned and operated business, we draw on a specialist team with over 35 years’ experience in engineering, machining, design and manufacture.

Trenchmate are constantly innovating our products using our own engineering department at our purpose-built 1200 sqm facility in Papakura, Auckland. We have Territory Managers based all over the North and South Islands, with satellite yards at bases all around New Zealand.

The design of our shields prioritises strength and safety, the health and wellbeing of our customers is at the heart of everything we do at Trenchmate. This priority stretches all the way from design, through to construction, testing, usage and maintenance. We use aluminium to help reduce weight where appropriate but still maintain a strong focus on strength and safety. With over two decades of use, testing and real-world feedback, our shields have evolved to now sit as the strongest, safest, most user-friendly and safest shields on the market.

We run robust tests on our shields to ensure they not only meet the safety threshold but exceed it by at least 1.8 times. As a safeguard Trenchmate has developed and built an in-house hydraulic press to physically test any new concept shields and existing shields to make sure they are still fit for purpose. We use this to place our trench shields under huge loads in the most extreme scenario.
