Rating social media for CRAP - something to ponder on a Friday afternoon…

US researchers evaluated the quality of Insta posts about amblyopia using the currency, reliability, authority and purpose (CRAP) test, concluding it is underused by eyecare professionals for public education.

Writing in Strabismus, US researchers evaluated the top 200 publicly available Insta posts about amblyopia between Oct and Dec2022. While a quarter of posts were from eyecare providers, only 3% were specifically from paediatric ophthalmologists, they found. Most posts, however, were from businesses that researchers considered lower quality.

“Instagram represents a tremendous opportunity to educate the public. Better utilising this resource may allow medical professionals to broadly spread accurate, unbiased data,” they concluded.

Aloha! It's all going on at CCLS' Eyeland Vibes at Trinity Wharf in Tauranga. People are in good spirits despite the inclement weather with good company and food keeping us afloat. By the end of day one we'd had no less than six top notch keynote presentations/workshops from cool as a cucumber Dr Elsie Chan (Oz), keeping things highly pertinent and practical, and Canadian Randy (no notes) Kojima impressing delegates with his seemingly endless contact lens knowledge. Local presentations have been punchy and well received. And there's been great participation by sponsors with short talks about their latest greatest products. Hawaiian night did not disappoint- full credit to the conference organisers. Make sure you catch our full conf coverage in the April issue of NZ Optics!
