Extended to November…

The consultation period for public feedback on the Kaikōura (Te Tai o Marokura) Marine Management Act has been extended until 11 November 2025.

Fisheries New Zealand and the Department of Conservation are seeking public feedback as part of a review of the Act’s performance over the past 10 years, and the success of its measures to protect the unique environment of Kaikōura.

The measures included in the consultation are:
• The Kaikōura Marine Guardians
• Hikurangi Marine Reserve
• Te Rohe o te Whānau Puha Whale Sanctuary
• Ōhau New Zealand Fur Seal Sanctuary
• Customary Management Measures:
o Mangamaunu Mātaitai
o Oaro Mātaitai
o Te Waha o te Marangai Mātaitai
o Te Taumanu o Te Waka a Māui Taiāpure
o Oaro-Haumuri Taiāpure

Public submissions will be used in a report for the Ministers of Conservation and of Oceans and Fisheries, which will inform their decisions on whether changes are needed for the Kaikōura coastal and marine area, and if so, what changes are made.
