Medicinal Cannabis

For some the light at the end of the tunnel.

Although it is pleasing to see medicinal cannabis products being grown & manufactured here in New Zealand itโ€™s disappointing to see qualified medical herbalists being left out of the conversation.

Who better than to prescribe a medicinal herb to a patient than a herbalist right? Well itโ€™s a no-brainer one would think given that our craft is herbal medicine. Given the thousands of years of history of medicinal use and prescribing of cannabis for our patients before this right was rudely and unjustifiably ripped from herbalists and other practitioners you would think we would be the first port of call - sadly not so.

Herbalists have a relationship and a love of herbs that others do not, we understand the constituents, medicinal qualities of them as we do contraindications and more importantly, our patients individual requirements.

Treatment of our patients is a โ€˜Holistic Approachโ€™, we are not just treating our clients with medicinal cannabis, their ailment, their dis-ease we are treating them as a person a WHOLE. We offer much needed support & guidance.

Research shows that most medical practitioners feel that they donโ€™t have the education, time, available products, or the product knowledge to feel comfortable prescribing them says Mike Eyres, NZAMH (NZ Association of Medical Herbalists) spokesperson and I would add, why would they, herbal medicine is not their specialization.

It is my considered opinion that
Pharmaceutical cannabis products should not be the only access pathway for patients, that a safe and supportive consultation can be provided by medical herbalists who are well placed and qualified to offer individualised plant medicine prescribing.

Iโ€™m not sure of the pathway forward in medicinal cannabis for herbalists like myself but I will continue to educate myself and learn all there is to know about this fascinating herb and to support my clients in their quest for wellness.

Yours in Health ๐ŸŒฑ

Plantain (Plantago Lanceolata & Plantago Major). This is such a versatile, useful and incredibly abundant wild 'w**d'. I use it in skincare, as a medicinal food, in herbal teas, smoothies & salad dressings for it's mineral & vitamin content, also in first aid.

Plantain has a long history of use. It was used in the 'Nine herbs charm' of the Anglo Saxons during the 10th century to heal infections. It was introduced to North America by the Europeans & quickly became known as 'White Man's Foot', as everywhere that the white invaders went, so to did the Plantain. It self seeds so easily and quickly, that it's now established on every continent on earth (except for the arctic regions). In Eastern Europe Plantain has been used for centuries as a cough syrup, as it has a lovely soothing effect on an irritated or dry throat.

Plantain is well known for it's ability to treat wounds and burns. It has blood clotting agents and the natural allantoin promotes cell regeneration whilst the natural silica aids tissue healing. It can be used as a poultice to draw out splinters, simply mash up a handful of leaves (in a first aid situation you can do this in your mouth), and then place on top of the wound or splinter. Wrap with muslin or fine cloth's to hold in place. It's also used topically to soothe irritation & infection, to treat skin problems such as eczema & acne and to relieve itchiness and stinging sensations from bug bites and stinging nettles.

I use the young leaves in fresh salads year round, finely slicing them to avoid chewiness, or add them to soups and stews much like I would spinach. Plantain retains a lot of body and color once cooked. It can also be brewed into a tea or added to juices and smoothies to benefit from it's nutritional properties: Vitamins C & K, and Minerals Calcium, Silicon, Zinc and Potassium. Internally it has an antiseptic action which makes it good for treating infections of the digestive, respiratory & urinary tracts.

Tomorrow I'll post more info about Plantain, relating to it's seedheads. Follow to stay posted.

It's been a busy weekend in the garden getting my veges & herbs into pots๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒป had such tight & sore muscles, so today was selfcare day, time for a catch up with friends cups of tea & freshly baked peanut brownies ๐Ÿ˜‹ & a blissful deep hour long therapeutic massage using my new cannabis balm. I would have to say WOW my tight muscles are so relaxed out, the combo of a good therapist & the balm, super impressed & to top it off a long soak in the bath with mineral salts, imm ๐Ÿ›€๐Ÿ˜ด it's so good to take time out to relax the physical & treat ourselves ~ namaste to you all, love yourselves & take care ๐Ÿ˜˜
