From The IAED: Celebrating the 6th of March as the day of Equine Dental Practitioners.

As a token of appreciation for all our hardworking colleagues in the barns, we would like to honor your work today. We know that equine dentistry that serves the entire equine population would not be possible without equine dental practitioners who treat horses in the field every day.

Similar to human medicine, not every horse requires advanced diagnostics for routine care. Not every case requires an endoscopic, radiographic, or even a CT examination, let alone endodontic treatment or extraction. We thank the equine dental practitioners who, during their examinations with headlamps and mirrors or oral endoscopes, are able to detect issues and decide whether further diagnostic evaluation by a veterinarian, who is specialized in equine dentistry, is necessary. We appreciate those who then refer those cases.

Here's a good example of why using condition isnt a good indicator of whether your horse needs a dental. A client recently became the owner of a new horse and thought she'd get his teeth checked. Fortunately he was referred to me by the dental tech that saw him. The photo shows him after his dental so he is d***y with sedation on board. Check the comparison photos of his teeth.

Incisor case of the week in a 15 yo miniature before and after collage.
The 303 is erupting behind and into the 301 and 302 causing pressure displacing them forwards and their mobility. A diagonal bite has resulted due to the lack of contact on the upper incisors. Food is being forced between the teeth, PD is present. Function of the mandible has been restored and pressure taken off the 301, 302 at the 'routine' dental visit and X-rays ordered for further diagnostics.

Happy New Year. Back to work for many today. Im on gear maintenence and my vehicle is getting an emergency treatment thanks to Kirwan's in Rangiora as the window electrics have packed a sad with the driver window stuck on open!
Photos: first photo show some of the instruments that are under maintenance or getting new burrs.
Check out the wear on the burr that goes on the black instrument at the bottom of the first photos. This is the special, very specific instrument I use for reducing protuberances such as ramps and correcting table surfce angle diviations. Second photo is an end on view. See how the diameter has decreased!

This makes my heart sing. A 27year old that has received regular dental care with me for around 15 years was presented for her routine dental today. It has been 2.5 years since her last visit due to circumstances beyond control but the mouth continued to maintain very good occlusal heights of the individual teeth. Good dental care really pays.
