Our history doesn’t date back to 2019 but our story does.
It was early December when a Wuhan-based ophthalmologist discussed the possibility of an outbreak of an illness that resembles severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
They stay silent until 31 March 2019 when they finally inform the World Health Organisation (WHO).
In the third week of 2020 cases of the virus spread throughout China and into other parts of the Asian continent. A few days later the Chinese government announces 581 cases.
On the 24 January 2020 New Zealand’s MoH (Ministry of Health) dedicates resources to monitor the situation. At this time they determine the risk is low locally and the global number of cases rises to nearly 2800; the death toll reaches 80.
Fast forward one month, and on 24 February there are 79,331 cases confirmed globally, 2069 of which are outside of China.
Covid-19 Hits Closer To Home
On 1 March the global death toll tops 3000. The New Zealand Government announces that anyone who has visited northern Italy and South Korea must self-isolate for 14 days.
By 8 March more than 100 countries have reported cases of Covid-19.
At 11.59pm on 25 March 2020 New Zealand is under level 4 lock-down for at least 4 weeks.
Local Economy Grinds To A Health-Saving Halt
Shares plummet.
Productivity is parked up.
Businesses close their doors with employees packing up their belongings they need for the next month. The Government has provided a wage subsidy for businesses with a significant drop in revenue caused by Covid-19. However there are many gaps which leave businesses of all sizes scrambling to keep their heads above water.
Gift By Local is Founded
It was 8 April, halfway through the level 4 lock down that Gift By Local became an idea.
The true effects of closed businesses, workers not in jobs and our reliance on imported goods shows. Personal posts from communities throughout New Zealand are pleading for consumers to support local.
Over the course of 10 days we brainstormed what we could do and that’s when Gift By Local was no longer an idea but a reality.
Our Why
We believe in times like these the local community should support local businesses. After all, they support us.
