Pregnancy hormones progesterone and relaxin loosen ligaments and relax muscles, they start their job in the first trimester and can hang around for 6 months or more after birth! These hormones are vital to create space to grow and birth a baby but can cause aches, pains and muscle weakness.

Swimming and water based exercises are low impact and perfect for pregnancy and the postnatal period. Being in water provides weightlessness and relief for sore backs, hips and legs while increasing strength and fitness and reducing the risk of impact related injury.

Aquanatal classes: for any stage of pregnancy, low-medium intensity, $9 per session, 6.15pm Tuesdays, bookings required.

Aqua fit for parents: fun and engaging for baby while you engage your core, suitable for babies 6 months and older, $9 per session, 9.30am and 10.30am Thursdays, bookings required.

Sensory swim for babies: floating toys, ball pit, bubbles and more, standard admission fee, 9am til 11am Tuesdays.

Christchurch midwife Ashley has created this amazing resource for parents and parents to be. Inclusive, realistic, supportive and sharing all the ins and outs of postpartum. So often the messy parts of having a baby are treated as taboo; as a society we don’t discuss the massive physical and emotional changes that take place, which can leave parents feeling isolated and wondering if their experience is ‘normal’. Check out the wealth of information on insta and the website for further resources.

We are super excited to have a brand new primary birthing unit right on our doorstep and hope that this will keep lots of women closer to home and to their whānau and support people.

📚Research shows that healthy, low risk women who choose to birth in a primary birthing unit are more likely to have a normal birth and experience less medical interventions when compared to those who choose to birth in a hospital setting, such as Christchurch Womens. Birthing in a primary unit is safe for both mum and baby and reduces the likelihood of further medical complications.

Chat to your midwife to find out more about what is available at Oromairaki and if it’s the right birthing space for you.
