am often consulted in the mental health clinic with young children who are not fitting in or able to conform to the educational system in both social and academic realms. This results in significant distress and self esteem issues leading to anxiety, depression and DSH.

The reasons for their challenges range from learning difficulties, social communication difficulties, language difficulties, sensory difficulties and even cultural differences.

It is common knowledge that an individuals health is determined by everything surrounding that person…the determinants of health. The determinants of mental health vs other health issues are identical. Good diet, sleep, physical activity, social interaction (as measured sufficient by the individual👍🏾) and connectedness.

People with disabilities or different abilities are overrepresented in both somatic and mental health unwellness. To expect them to adapt to a ‘normal world’ poses more challenges for them. Rather we should adapt the world for them. And it that process we will find that things are better for all of us.

Highly recommend this read. This was introduced to me in 2009, one year after the book was published. It has been one of the books that gave me the most insight into human behaviour and into myself! You won’t regret it…❤️🤗

Hello fellow villagers! Hope everyone has had some R and R in one form or another and are reset to take on the new year!

I have been able to take a break for a while because my clinic is usually quieter around school holidays! I am however preparing for the flood gates to open when the young ones return to school….This is the pattern every year. In every geographic region I have worked, the pattern is the same.
Obviously most of us are more relaxed around the holidays, so kids are the same.

However, I have seen that at least 40% of children in my clinical cohort in all regions I have worked, struggle with the current education systems that are in place.

This is because the current educational model both here in NZ and in SA prize IQ above all else, with little regard for Emotional Quotient, Social Quotient, Spiritual Quotient and Physical Quotients.

However, those with a balance across all quotient areas display more resilience and have more success in the real world setting post primary and secondary education.
Preparing children for life based on the current education system and societal portrayal of intelligence as the only desirable trait, is setting them up for potential difficulty and increases the risk of stress and decreases resilience.

Diversity needs to extend to educational models, recognising that we need all skills and strengths to make the world work well!

I am often surprised about how surprised my patients are when I discuss the importance of diet in both physical and mental health…the health of the gut and brain is interlinked and exists in a bidirectional axis…Serotonin ( your happy mood neurotransmitter) is manufactured in the gut, 70% of your immune cells exist in your gut…if you think about it, your gut is the first direct contact with the outside world (whatever you ingest is in direct contact with your internal physiology!).

This is concerning when you think that the average teenage diet consists McDonalds and BK!

This concept also explains why ecological health of the earth and environment is essential for our physical and mental health as human beings.

Developing healthy eating habits in our daily lives and paying attention to our children’s diets from a young age could set their health status and wellbeing for the rest of their lives…

This info graphic is part of an article on the Interplay between Human Intestinal Microbiota and Gut-to-Brain Axis and the Relationship with Autism Spectrum Disorders. This is a currently extensively researched topic that links the occurrence of Autism with gut health!

There is overwhelming medical evidence to support the essential role of diet in not only body health but brain health too.

For all those times in my twenties where I thought that my point of view was the absolute truth😝!
I have learnt and realised the difference of what is absolute truth and what is truth for the individual. YOUR truth and perception of things, events and people are shaped by who YOU ARE (and how you perceive things!) The actual reality is processed in the individual brain by the pathways that exist. The pathways in turn, are shaped by our individual experiences in our lives interacting with our genetics. So many potential realities and truths can therefore exist.

How many arguments and battles would I have avoided in my youth if I had realised sooner that the work on Husserl, Heidegger and Kant could explain so many differences in opinion, perception and reality!

It has helped me rethink and deal with the spectrum of psychosis in my work and just with life in general.
The current state of the world presents a good example of how this mindset can be used to reduce stress i.e. with the debate to vaccinate or not. ❤️

Thank you for the wonderful response to my story on autism! Here is an infographic in response to one of the questions. If you are familiar with my views on the topic, I call it autism spectrum condition not disorder because I believe that society could do much much more to accomodate the talents of these awesome fellow humans, instead of focussing on their differences in social ability!

Here are some of the possible early signs of autism. Always have a full sensory and physical checkup and consult your paediatrician if you have concerns. Early intervention and support can change the life trajectory of these individuals🤗If you have any questions please dm me🌺

What is the definition of right and wrong. Is it determined by law, religion, majority? How does one develop a moral code? In this time of information overload, confusion, misinformation and lack of critical appraisal, we need to engage the part of our minds that can sit and reflect on these questions. There are the sensitive souls out there that overthink and suffer…then there are those who immerse themselves in ignorance, consumerism and the culture of instant gratification that has ravaged not only our youths but our adults as well. It’s all about balance!!! We need to enjoy what the world has to offer but also take time to reflect on the current issues facing humanity. Don’t overthink but DO think, enjoy life but don’t immerse yourselves in consumerism🌺

In child and adolescent mental health, the most under diagnosed organic disorder contributing to cognitive and behavioural symptoms is Epilepsy! It is well known that patients with epilepsy have higher incidence if mental health disorders. A good clinical history, examination and clinical investigation during consultation with a neuropsychiatrist and neurologist is often needed as this is one of the most complex areas of brain medicine. This infographic gives some useful stats on the impact of Young epilepsy. Timeous and appropriate intervention can change a child’s life trajectory ❤️

Something light-hearted for all of us parents who are breaking our backs to provide our kids with the basics, life skills, emotional support and validation! Do not expect validation from your kids! If you get it from them, then it will be pleasant and wonderful . If they don’t validate you, that’s ok too. Remind yourself and your spouse of the fantastic job that you do… EVEN THOR HAS THIS PROBLEM LOL! 🤗

Lifestyle psychiatry is an emerging field of psychiatry that recognises that psychiatric illness has a large biological component. Of course all lifestyle factors that cause pathological processes in other organs of the body could also cause pathology in the physiology of the brain! This is so important in the prevention of mental illness and for recovery from mental illness. When we speak the of biopsychosocial treatment, it is often assumed that biological means purely medication! Psychopharmacology is still important of course, but these factors of lifestyle form an essential part of the biological treatment! Here is the evidence for the different factors with different disorders and the density of the lines connecting the factors to the different disorders indicate the strength of the scientific evidence for that factor playing a role in the treatment/recovery AND the prevention (child psychiatrist says yay!) of mental health disorders! Check it out! …one can see how socioeconomic status ties in with this concept as well (and how this fits into the topic of colonisation and racism)

So the previous post on the conquering of India caused quite a stir in the commentary and in messages I received! First of all, I was glad to see that this audience had questions on the source of this quote and whether this was a true quote. The answer is not simple. There is much debate and allegedly this above quote is the actual quote made by General MacCaulay who was stationed in India. I still have a problem with the concept though. It smacks of arrogance that anglisation of a nation is the best thing for that nation! So either way it still implies colonising people’s minds and way of life🌺 Well done village on the critical appraisal of things read on the internet! And even though historically we were not there, we can appraise records and fact check and there is mixed evidence for both these quotes, but anecdotally we can see this reflected in society today.
