Back in July, we spoke with Tahmina and her sister, Narmina, over a video call from Azerbaijan. With a friend translating and a few emails traded back and forth, they made an extraordinary choice: to place their trust in us and the Kera hoist to help change their lives.

These moments remind us why we love the work we do: helping people sleep without fear, move with confidence, and experience a new level of independence at home. Thank you to every family who trusts us. Your courage and resilience is what drives us to do what we do.

“The only option was a sling – which she didn’t want.” OT Nikki describes her first scripting of a Kera Travel in Australia and HT engineer Alex O’Keefe shows how it works - including the 45-second pack down.

The Kera Travel was a product developed at request from our clients who wanted to take the same mobility of the Kera Home when they went on holiday. The result is a flight-ready 23kg portable hoist with the same single-carer transfer that requires zero standing strength.

Thanks to Sarah for the superman!

💬 “Did you break your back?”
It’s a question people often ask after a spinal injury, but it’s not that simple.
In his latest blog, Mark Williams shares his experience of a C4/C5 spinal cord injury and why “breaking your back” isn’t the same as damaging your spinal cord.
Read Mark’s first-hand account of how just a few centimetres changes everything from movement to independence, and how the Kera hoist system helps bridge the gap between limitation and freedom.

“It’s not about the bones, it’s about the signals.”

In “It’s Not Just a Broken Back - The Crucial Difference”, Mark Williams shares a first-hand look at C4/C5 tetraplegia, exploring how injury level defines function, and why transferring ability is the true measure of independence.
For OTs working with spinal injury clients, this is an insightful read on how assistive technology like the Kera hoist system can preserve shoulders, protect joints, and empower long-term autonomy.

As MND progresses, standing transfers become harder – and riskier. The Kera sit2sit hoist was designed in New Zealand to make this stage safer and simpler.

It’s a compact, mechanical sit-to-sit hoist that moves you smoothly from one seated position to another – bed to wheelchair, wheelchair to toilet – without needing to stand or rely on a sling. One caregiver can do the transfer safely, in just minutes, without heavy lifting.

For families living with MND, that changes everything. It keeps couples together at home, and gives caregivers back their confidence – and their backs.

Kathy and Paul know it well. When Kathy’s MND progressed, she didn’t want to move to a full sling hoist. With the Kera, Paul can manage all transfers himself – safely and comfortably. As Kathy’s needs have changed, HT Systems has helped them adapt their Kera to keep up – so they can keep living life, together, at home.

👉 If you or someone you support has MND and transfers are becoming difficult,** talk to your occupational therapist or contact us at https://htsystems.co.nz to see whether the Kera sit2sit could help.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND/ALS) changes things quietly at first. A little extra effort to stand up, a few more moments to steady yourself — until suddenly, simple things like getting out of bed or moving to the toilet start to feel risky.

That’s when most people reach out for help. But occupational therapists say the best time to plan is long before a crisis.

Early advice from an OT can make everyday life safer and easier – with small changes like grab rails, raised seats, or transfer aids that take the strain off you and your caregiver. These aren’t signs of giving up – they’re signs of taking charge.

Because getting the right tools early can protect your independence and your caregiver’s health. It’s about staying at home, together, for longer.

đź’¬ If you know someone newly diagnosed with MND, share this with them.

Getting advice early could make all the difference.

What does freedom look like?

For Kera user Mark, it’s not just having Netflix on demand or booking flights in bed at midnight. It’s being able to say yes – to trips, shows, and adventures – without worrying about unsafe transfers or inaccessible hotel rooms.

Mark received his Kera Travel hoist six months ago. Since then, he’s booked trips, planned festivals, and regained the confidence to live fully – not just online, but out in the world.

“I don’t need a full team or a hoist mounted to the ceiling. I just need one caregiver or one friend. And from that moment, choice returned. Freedom returned. The ability to say yes to life returned.”

Kathy was hesitant to start using a hoist as her MND (ALS) progressed. She found the Kera online and recognised that it could delay the need for a full sling hoist. With the Kera, her husband Paul could continue caring for her at home on his own, without the physical strain of manual lifting.

Together, they’ve been able to manage daily transfers safely and comfortably. As Kathy’s condition has changed, they’ve worked with HT Systems to add accessories and small modifications to keep the Kera meeting their needs – helping them stay living together at home for as long as possible.

Independence shouldn’t depend on a hotel - it should travel with you. Most hotels stop at a roll-in shower or grab bar, but the most crucial part of an accessible stay, the bed transfer, is often left to chance.

Find out how Mark took control of his travel needs when he discovered our Kera Travel portable hoist.

👉 Predictable, safe transfers, in any standard hotel room
👉 Retractable legs (no more worrying about bed clearance)
👉 Packs down to just 60cm x 55cm x 53cm, 20kg for true portability

Tired of inaccessible hotel rooms, Mark Williams shares how the Kera Travel hoist restored his freedom, safety, and dignity while traveling in a wheelchair.

💬 “We were at a loss before. With the Kera I can manage here at home by myself… and Jean doesn’t have to go into a rest home.” – Erik

When Jean’s MS meant she couldn’t stand, Erik was lifting her by hand several times a day. Other equipment didn’t work — hoists were too big, too slow, or unsafe.

The Kera sit2sit changed everything. Now, Erik can transfer Jean safely on his own. He can take time for himself while a caregiver helps. And Jean is comfortable, feel secure in the lift and is able to stay at home.

For families facing mobility challenges, this is the difference between burnout and balance — between losing independence and keeping life on your terms.
