Not all iron is created equal but what you put on your plate can make a big difference. Try mixing up your proteins with a combo of animal and plant-based sources. Haem iron (the kind found in meat) is easier for your body to absorb, but plant-based options still bring plenty of benefits to the table.

Want to give your iron levels a little boost? Pair your meat with veggies, add a hit of vitamin C (think tomatoes, citrus, or capsicum), and aim for some lean red meat a few times a week.

Your body will love the iron upgrade!

World Iron Awareness Week is coming and our friends Beef and Lamb New Zealand are putting on an epic event!

On 18 October at 8 AM, participants are invited to gather at the parkrun flags in Auckland’s iconic Cornwall Park for a relaxed 5KM walk, jog, or run. The event promises fresh air, complimentary beef burgers, and an energising playlist curated by Nathan Fry to keep spirits high.

Beef + Lamb NZ Ambassador Stacey Waaka will be on hand to inspire and motivate attendees. The morning will also feature goodie bags, spot prizes, a lively BBQ, and plenty of engaging conversation. Families, dogs, prams, or groups of friends are all welcome to join! The goal is simple: to get moving and fuel well with the Iron to Move initiative.

Want to keep your iron levels up? It all starts with enjoying a variety of nutritious whole foods each day.

When it comes to iron, think red. Red meats usually pack more haem iron than chicken or fish; and the redder the meat, the more iron it typically has. Just a heads up though: drinks like tea and coffee can actually make it harder for your body to absorb iron, thanks to the tannins they contain.

If you're someone who's at risk of low iron, a little meal planning can go a long way in keeping your levels where they should be.

Let's iron out the facts, because these numbers are too real:

* Over a third of teenage girls aren’t getting enough iron each day.
* 1 in 14 Kiwi women are running low.
* And a whopping 15.6% of women aged 35–44 have full-blown iron deficiency anaemia.

Low iron isn’t rare, it’s common, and it can leave you feeling flat. Time to show your iron levels some love!
