Cortisol vs. Melatonin: The Balance Between Stress & Sleep

Your body runs on rhythm - and two key hormones help set the tone: Cortisol and Melatonin.

☀️ Cortisol is your get-up-and-go hormone. It’s highest in the morning to help you wake up, focus, and tackle the day.

🌙 Melatonin is your wind-down hormone. It rises in the evening, helping you relax and drift into deep, restorative sleep.

When stress levels stay high, Cortisol doesn’t drop like it should — and that can block Melatonin from doing its job. The result?
Trouble falling asleep, waking through the night (including using the toilet), and feeling tired even after a full night’s rest.

👀 REM Sleep⁠

REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep begins about 90 minutes after you fall asleep, and it’s one of the most critical stages of your sleep cycle.⁠

During REM sleep, your brain processes memories, balances emotions, and your body repairs and restores itself for the day ahead.⁠

When you don’t get enough REM sleep, you might notice:⁠
😴 Feeling tired even after a full night’s rest⁠
💭 Trouble focusing or remembering things⁠
💤 More stress or emotional ups and downs⁠

How to help your body reach REM sleep:⁠
Lie flat on your back with your palms facing the ceiling, and take 10 slow, deep breaths from your tummy. This simple exercise helps shift your body from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest mode - calming your nervous system and preparing your brain for deeper, more restorative sleep.
