Subject: LOCAL AUTHOR: Taumarunui physician Dr H.E. Pfeffer releases debut poetry collection ‘No Atom Lost’

To: The Editor
Kia ora,
I am writing to share a local success story that may be of interest to your readers.
After living and practicing medicine in Aotearoa since 1987, and being a member of the Taumarunui community for many years, I have just released my debut poetry anthology, No Atom Lost: Selected Poems 2024–2026.
No Atom Lost is an introspective collection of poetry that explores the cyclical nature of existence, memory, and the enduring essence of the self.
The collection of 62 poems is deeply influenced by the King Country landscape and my experiences as a physician. It explores the "medical humanism" of our daily lives and the resilience found in the natural world around us—from the frost of our winters to the song of the Tui.
I have attached a full media release with more details about the book's themes and my background. I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you about a potential feature or interview, or to provide a review copy for the paper.
Thank you for your time and for all you do to support local voices in the Ruapehu District.
Ngā mihi nui,
Harald Edwin Pfeffer

MEDIA RELEASE: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Taumarunui Physician-Poet Explores the Architecture of Existence in New Anthology
TAUMARUNUI, NZ – February 2026 – Harald Edwin Pfeffer, a trilingual physician based in Aotearoa since 1987, announces the release of his debut poetry anthology, No Atom Lost: Selected Poems 2024–2026 (ISBN: 978-1-0671432-0-6).

The collection, which features 62 selected works, is described as a "philosophical architecture in verse". No Atom Lost is an introspective collection of poetry that explores the cyclical nature of existence, memory, and the enduring essence of the self.
Drawing on a lifelong commitment to the observation of life—informed by his medical background and his journey from South Africa to the Ruapehu District—Pfeffer explores themes ranging from clinical humanity to the cosmic symbols of New Zealand. The anthology is structured into five movements, featuring pivotal works such as Time, There is a Clarity in Winter, and the title poem, No Atom Lost.
"This manuscript represents the core narrative of a two-year transformation," says Pfeffer. "It is for those who find comfort in the laws of physics and crave a structural meaning to their lives".
No Atom Lost is available for purchase starting February 27, 2026 (hardback and paper-back book) with the kindle e-book available on preorder now.
In accordance with the National Library of New Zealand Act 2003, a copy will be submitted for permanent preservation in the National Library’s collection.

AUTHOR BIO
Harald Edwin Pfeffer is a trilingual poet and physician who has lived in Aotearoa New Zealand since 1987. Born in South Africa to Austrian parents, he immigrated to avoid compulsory military service under apartheid, a move that fostered a deep commitment to the preservation of life and human rights.
His poetry blends a scientific lexicon with a lyrical tone, exploring "medical humanism" and rigorous Stoicism. Based in the Ruapehu District, his work is often grounded in the specific symbols of his home—from the winter frost to the song of the Tui. No Atom Lost is his first formal collection, representing a culmination of his recent philosophical and chronological archive.

Dear Patient

I hope this letter finds you well.

After practising medicine in Taumarunui since 1987, I’ve made the very difficult decision to retire and close Pfeffer Medical Services. My last day of work will 27 June 2025.

This hasn’t been an easy choice. It’s been a privilege to care for you and your families/whānau, and I’m deeply grateful for the trust you’ve placed in me and my team over the years.

While I had hoped to find a new owner, no arrangements were able to be finalised, and I believe now is the right time to step away.

I understand this may feel sudden, but the challenges of continuing as a sole practitioner have become increasingly difficult, especially after my nursing staff, in anticipation of my retirement, have found other employers. This has left only Shelley and Desiree and me working at the practice and this is not sustainable.

I’ve spoken with Dr Graeme Bain, who is my GP at Taumarunui Health Hub, and he and his team are happy to continue your care. Your medical records will be securely transferred to their practice. You will, of course, continue to be able to choose who will continue to care for your medical needs.

Taumarunui is home for Desiree and me. Thank you again for the privilege of being part of this community, your lives and your care.

Warm regards, ngā manaakitanga

Dr Harald Pfeffer

Media Statement
Government’s public consultation to address healthcare crisis “badly flawed” | 17 April 2025
The General Practice Owners Association (GenPro) has criticised a Ministry of Health public consultation process on workforce regulation as poorly designed and biased towards outcomes likely to compromise patient safety and lead to patients not being able to see a GP when they need to.

The Ministry describes its consultation paper Putting Patients First: Modernising health workforce regulation as “an opportunity to put patients at the centre, modernise and streamline the system, and improve efficiency”.

But GenPro Chair Dr Angus Chambers says the paper’s proposals do anything but put patients first.

“They seek to legitimise government plans to address the workforce crisis by focusing on lowering standards of care and clinical safety guidelines, rather than tackling the core issue of a lack of funding,” Dr Chambers said.

A narrow 21-day window for submissions (from March 28 to April 30) also contributes to what Dr Chambers describes as a “cursory attempt to fix a workforce crisis with band aid solutions”.

“The Ministry is seeking public feedback through an online survey, but the leading nature of its questions suggests it’s already made up its mind on outcomes,” says Dr Chambers.

“Namely, cheap fixes focused on slashing regulation and standards, with unintended consequences of a healthcare regime that is less safe and more costly, with fewer professional organisations overseeing standards of care, and with lesser-qualified health professionals plugging workforce gaps.”

An example of a leading question from the survey cited by Dr Chambers is: ‘How important is it to you that health professions are regulated by separate regulators, given the potential for inefficiency, higher costs, and duplication of tasks?’

“The survey is the medical equivalent of a political ‘push poll’ in which an organisation attempts to manipulate or alter voters’ views under the guise of conducting an opinion poll. There is no room for these types of negative tactics in primary healthcare,” Dr Chambers says.

“There are solid reasons why separate regulatory authorities regulate health professionals as different as dentists, chiropractors, psychologists, nurses, optometrists, and GPs, but on this topic – as elsewhere – the consultation paper is clearly angled towards eliciting a quick-fix response from the public.”

The Ministry of Health has failed the New Zealand population with respect to workforce planning. It is unclear why we should trust it now when it’s performed so poorly to allow this situation to arise.

“Cursory remedies such as these only exacerbate our healthcare crisis and lead to long-term harm. From a primary healthcare perspective, we know that government needs to completely overhaul an arcane funding and pricing model which is driving GPs to the wall.”

Despite more complex patient health needs and higher operating costs, general practices have received no increase in funding in real terms for several years and are restricted in adjusting their prices.

“General practices are struggling to stay financially viable and recruit health professionals, so are having to close their books to new patients, reduce their services, or close completely. The results are very apparent: delays in accessing general practices and crowded emergency departments,” says Dr Chambers.
