It is spring in New Zealand now and it is the golden season for the hard working bees to produce Manuka honey for BEE+. For Manuka honey, flowering season is relatively short, usually 6 to 12 weeks (and often less) between September and March. The timing and length of flowering varies between regions, between seasons, and cold wet weather can delay its onset. Flowering commences in September or October in Northland. However, in Taranaki, the flowering season does not commence until late December or early January and usually lasts less than six weeks.

Sit and watch beehives and you’ll see the bees departing and arriving to and from all directions. Young worker bees will take off, fly a corkscrew pattern up and back down, only to just go back inside. They are visually recording their location by very basic landmarks, shapes, some color, and verifying that they are home by the scent of their familiar colony mates. They sniff and get sniffed at the landing board to make sure they have the Queen’s scent.
