Did you Know that Activated Carbon is used for the filtration of distilled spirits? It is a polishing step to strip the spirit of impurities such as aldehydes, aminos, and fusil oils that can result in undesirable colors, odors or tastes after distillation.
There are numerous grades and sizes of Activated Carbon our 18x30 GAC is the ideal size.
Use a minimum of 8g of Activated Carbon for every 1 L of spirit you plan to clean.
One of the easiest ways to use carbon is to put the spirit in a glass jar or alcohol safe container and add carbon to it. Stirring or mixing now & again is required to get good results.
If you put the carbon in a muslin bag, you can easily remove it later. Most brewers choose to leave the carbon in solution for 3 days, stirring or shaking when they walk by. Add loose carbon if you have a fine mesh filter, or possibly by slowly running it through a coffee filter. If cleaning 8L of newly distilled spirit, 400g is a good target. At 500g, providing 62.5g per litre you will be maximizing your polishing power.
Activated carbon can be dusty, you should clean your carbon prior to use, you can do so by boiling for 15 mins, or by running water through it for 15mins. Let it drain.
Remember filtration speed affects the carbon's ability to polish so slow is best, if you have a valve or tap dial it back so that the spirit is dripping out rather than flowing in a constant stream.
