We pay tribute to Tā Tumu Te Heuheu Tukino VIII laid to rest on Monday. A quiet and humble, yet fierce leader, a statesman and absolute gentleman. Tā Tumu lead out on many kaupapa of significance within Ngati Tuwharetoa but also nationally and internationally such as Federation of Maori Authorities, Iwi Leaders, The World Heritage Foundation, the return of cultural and commercial lands to Ngati Tuwharetoa that had been taken by the Crown, and more. Tā Tumu Te Heuheu appointed Dr Leanne Te Karu as an initial trustee of the Tuwharetoa IMPB. Dr Te Karu also continues to deliver much needed clinical services within our community.

Dr Leanne Te Karu stands as a pioneer in Aotearoa’s health and disability system, recognised as the country’s first pharmacist prescriber. With a career spanning clinical practice, governance, research, and iwi development, she is dedicated to weaving together clinical excellence, cultural safety, and Indigenous knowledge. Working in general practice, medical clinics, and marae settings alongside rongoā practitioners, Dr Te Karu is committed to optimising medicine use to improve health outcomes and reduce harm for whānau across the motu.
