New Zealand has some of the highest UV levels in the world, so sunscreen is a must. Choose a broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher, apply it 20 minutes before going outside, and reapply every 2 hours or after swimming or sweating.

Use enough (around 7 teaspoons for full body coverage) and don’t forget spots like ears, neck, lips and scalp. No sunscreen blocks 100%, so combine it with hats, clothing, sunglasses and shade — and remember, there’s no such thing as a safe tan.

Men are 34% less likely to see a dermatologist than women. That hesitation means changes in the skin often go unchecked until it’s too late.

It’s not just about avoiding the doctor. Misconceptions like “healthy tans” or skipping sunscreen play a big part in increasing the risk.

The result? More late-stage melanoma diagnoses and lower survival rates for men. A simple skin check could change that.
