Ann Cools and Ben Ashworth are two people making significant headway in the development of shoulder rehabilitation.

Recent studies have shown the benefit of strengthening the shoulder in multiple directions at time, as well as strengthening the shoulder in a way that considers how the shoulder actually functions. I.e., sequence of movements, resistances and forces.

See the above slides for a few examples!

Would you give these a try?

Strong, well-controlled shoulder musculature is one of the single most important things a physiotherapist can target to reduce pain, restore movement and prevent recurrence of shoulder disorders. Recent high-quality reviews and trials show consistent benefits of progressive strengthening (including rotator-cuff and scapular stabilizers) for pain reduction, improved function and better range of motion in rotator-cuff related pain.

Over the next few weeks we’re going to delve into what the rotator cuff is, some injuries that can occur, and how we address these as Physiotherapists 💪🏼🏋️💆‍♀️

Let’s clear the air about the iliotibial band (ITB)! This often-misunderstood structure gets blamed for pain and ‘tightness,’ but the truth is a little more complex. Swipe through to see some common myths about the ITB — and what’s really going on. 🦵🏼🏃🏾

Scoliosis affects around 2–3% of the New Zealand population — that’s roughly 100,000–150,000 people.

When the spine curves, as seen in the photo, it can impact balance, mobility, breathing mechanics, joint health, and muscle symmetry.

Physiotherapy helps minimise these effects through movement retraining, soft tissue release, joint mobilisation, and targeted strength and exercise programs.

Early assessment and a tailored physio plan can make a big difference in keeping you moving well and feeling your best. 💪🏼

In clinic, we’re always aiming to figure out the “injury driver”, or simply put, why has the injury occurred in the first place.

Sometimes this will be because of a clear incident, but other times aches and pains can creep up on us. In these situations, it’s important to look at how a persons muscles are activating and where a person is loading.

AXIT testing, as seen in the photo, is an awesome way to get accurate statistics on a persons strength and a persons rate of force development (RFD). It tells us if a certain muscle isn’t firing quickly, or has less strength than we’d expect.

AXIT testing allows us to figure out exact imbalances and create specific plans to help patients move forward with their functional goals!

Book in with any of the Physio’s and see if this would be helpful for you 😁💪🏼☺️

Whilst Sam enters his fourth week of placement here at Back In Action, we thought we’d share some of the valuable information he’s found regarding improving myofascial health.

Does your body ever feel tight and like foam rolling and stretching isn’t quite helping? That may be because your fascia (layers of tissue that cover muscles), is dehydrated causing it to tighten and constrict.

You may notice in the above image created by Sam, that men are recommended to have roughly 4L of water per day and women 3L - this is to aid in hydrating the fascia, preventing tension.

See the poll below to answer if you think you meet this water intake quota!

Sam has officially joined us for his final placement of his physiotherapy degree. He’s been studying through AUT and has found a passion for sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

Sam’s worked with Greerton Development all through the 2025 season, which was a perfect transition into Back in Action Physiotherapy due to our involvement with the club.

We look forward to spending the next 8-weeks with him. Make sure to say hi when you see him around the clinic 😁👋🏼
