Animals Inspiring Kids is a rural programme for children who live with challenges, disabilities or health conditions, with a focus on animal inspired learning, interactions and fun adventures. At 'the farm', we have a range of therapy animals including three goats, three horses, a miniature horse, two dogs, and two cats that love interacting with the children. Numbers are low, with a maximum of four children per session so I can monitor each child's progress and offer small group benefits which other programmes are not usually set up for. Please phone, email or message me for available times and days and we can set up a first visit for your child. Leanne Benjamin - Facilitator

General information

I live in Oropi on a lifestyle block with my partner and 'farm animals'. I have 14 years experience in mental health, support work and social service roles, and I have a passion for working with vulnerable children. I have a Diploma in Social Services, a Certificate in Mental Health and I am mid way through a Bachelor of Social Work with the University of Waikato. The children that I support live with their challenges daily, and suffer from disorders such as autism, ADHD, global developmental delay, and some have debilitating health conditions. These challenges often exclude them from school, activities, programmes and sports as they become too overwhelmed in busy environments. Instead the children that come to Animals Inspiring Kids begin to thrive once they make friends with the animals and learn about themselves and how to manage the challenges they face. The children learn about themselves through caring and interacting with the animals and this transfers positively to their home and school lives. I have had amazing feedback from parents, teachers, schools and organisations who have noticed huge improvements in the child's learning, coping strategies, and behaviours.

Animals Inspiring Kids

Animal inspired learning encourages the children to learn about animal behavior, their care and needs, using concepts such as respect, trust, gentleness, kindness, patience, caring, cooperation, empathy and helpfulness. These concepts are useful learning tools for the children to learn how to treat animals. This learning is reflected in how they treat themselves and each other, broadening their social skills and providing the courage to move outside of their comfort zone.
