Kia ora koutou,

Our staff here at Te Ōturu had the privilege of taking part in a Plant ID Wānanga with our rongoā guru, Matua Rob. He created a beautiful space for us, sharing resources on rongoā rākau and guiding us through different native rākau such as Koromiko and Kōwhai—their uses, their healing properties, and how they can support different hauora needs.

We were also given a booklet packed with mātauranga, helping us deepen our understanding of the native rākau that surround the space we work in every day.

To top it off, each of us was gifted a koauau and kawakawa panipani.

Ngā mihi Matua Rob—our team truly appreciates you, your mahi, the mātauranga you carry, and your wisdom. It was an amazing morning filled with learning, connection, and aroha for our taiao.

We’re excited to announce our Wāhine Maramataka Wānanga happening on Wednesday, 26th November, from 9:30am – 2:30pm.

Come spend the day connecting and sharing space with other wāhine, learning grounding and healing practices guided by te maramataka, and facilitated by our wāhine ataahua, Mere Horopapera.

It will be a beautiful opportunity to come together, learn, and replenish your wairua. 🌿

Te Ōturu is seeking a Traditional Māori Healer who upholds and practices Tikanga Māori, with proven experience in Mirimiri and/or Rongoā.

The ideal applicant will have strong cultural grounding, practical healing experience, and a genuine commitment to Māori health and wellbeing. You’ll be joining a dedicated and supportive team who are passionate about providing holistic care to our whaiora and community.

Keen to deepen your understanding of Rongoā Māori?
Join our kaupapa Māori, maramataka-aligned training programme based here in Te Puna.

Held fortnightly on Wednesdays, this immersive journey is designed to support learning in:
✨ Rongoā rākau – native plant identification
✨ Mirimiri – introduction to traditional healing massage
✨ Anatomy & physiology basics
✨ Maramataka guidance
✨ Māra kai organic principles
✨ Off-site visits to enhance practical learning

This programme is open to both beginners and those wanting to expand their current practice.

🌱✨ He taonga nō ngā tamariki o Te Puna ✨🌱

We had the absolute privilege of welcoming our Te Puna School tamariki to help us plant a collection of beautiful heritage fruit trees from Wairere Nursery, Gordonton.

Together, they planted:
🍑 2x Nectarine Goldmine
🍑 1x Peach Blackboy
🍑 1x Nectarine
🍐 3x Pear
🍑 2x Apricot

It was so special to see our kids getting their hands in the soil, connecting with the whenua, and learning about growing kai for the future. 🌿

A huge mihi to our tamariki and kaiako for their energy and aroha – these trees will continue to give for generations to come. 💚
