📣 From October 1st 2022, ACC will be covering some birth injuries 👏

What does this mean?

Women who give birth from 1 October will have some ACC cover to see a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist (such as myself 😉) for the following injuries:

👶 Pelvic Organ Prolapse: anterior wall (cystocele), posterior wall (rectocele), or uterine
👶 Obstetric a**l sphincter injury tears, or tears to the perineum, l***a, va**na, v***a, cl****is, cervix, re**um, a**s, or urethra
👶 Levator ani avulsion
👶 Coccyx fracture
👶 P***c rami fracture
👶 Pelvic joint damage from Obstetric trauma

Please share this wonderful news with the women in your life so we can give them the care they deserve!!

To book an appointment, head to tahealth.co.nz and click on the “Physio” tab. There is a "Book Now" button. For birth related injuries choose physio Jamie Thomas.

Nb: for any physios out there who need a bit of help in this area, I am available for mentoring!

How we are operating at Level 3 Step 2:

We hope everyone is managing well at the moment. We have a few things to update you on, as things slowly reopen.

Waitlist

We'd like to thank you for your patience over the past few weeks while we have been awaiting orders from the Ministry of Health and our colleagues at Te Atatu Health.

Although we are now able to see patients face to face, we are still required to limit patient contact as much as possible, so that means we still have reduced appointments available at present. We are working through our waitlist as quickly as we can. Online bookings are disabled for the moment as we need to have a quick talk before we can confirm a face to face appointment.

If you are waiting for an appointment please email us with a brief update of your condition to help us prioritise your appointment.

Vaccinations

As we work within a Medical Practice, we need to minimise any risk to vulnerable patients and staff. We have been requested to see those people who have not been vaccinated outside of clinic hours. If you are making an appointment, please advise of your vaccination status so we can schedule you appropriately.

Clinic procedure- Arrival reminder

A quick reminder regarding arrival at your appointment: please phone reception on 09 900 1111 to let them know you have arrived. They will screen you for COVID-19 symptoms on the phone. Please then wait in your car until we come to get you. When you enter the building, please have your mask on, sterilise your hands and sign in using the QR code.

If you have any respiratory symptoms such as a new or worsening cough, fever, shortness of breath, sore throat, sneezing or runny nose, loss of smell or taste, OR have been in a location of interest in the last 14 days, please let us know so we can reschedule your appointment.

We clean down the room between patients to make sure your visit is as safe as possible. Please bear with us if we are running a few minutes behind.

Invoicing

Thank you to those paying invoices online. We have now opened the EFTPOS machine in reception and have paywave to keep it contactless. If you would prefer to pay online our bank details for direct debit are detailed on the invoice.

If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us by email, or phoning the practice.

Bear with us as we get through our backlog, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Kind regards,

Tim and Jamie

During the lockdown, are you doing a bit more exercise than usual? With that extra effort have you noticed any new symptoms? A little leak here, a little leak there? Or have you had symptoms for some time? Maybe now is a good time to get stuck into some pelvic floor rehab!

- heaviness, dragging or bulging in the pelvic area,

Then take advantage of this great deal and book in for your consultation today (via our page or website teatatuhealth.co.nz)!

How we are continuing to help you via Video during the lockdown...

To our fantastic Community, What a crazy time!

Like you, we have spent the last few days sorting out our lives, and wondering how we are going to keep ourselves and the kids sane over the next month or so. We are obviously closed for face to face consultations for the foreseeable future.

We have all had to readjust our thinking around how services can be delivered, and we are no exception.

So how can physio work remotely? Well, some of you come to see us for hands on assessment and treatment. However, ALL of you will come away with a plan and a whole lot of advice (whether you want it or not!!).

In fact the majority of a diagnosis comes from the first interview, some from watching you move, and only a small proportion actually comes from feel.
Treatment-wise, it’s always good to be able to get our hands on, but again we are only ordinarily able to do this for maybe 30mins each week or so. Whereas, you have the rest of the week to implement a plan via exercise, posture, lifestyle changes etc

So, we will be offering video consults (telehealth) while we are closed. We’ll be doing this via the PhysiApp app that we already use for your exercise programmes.
You can book this via the Book now button on our page or www.tahealth.co.nz/physio.

So if you need to check in on progress, further your programmes, have us teach you how to tape something, or just need a legitimate excuse to give yourself time away from the kids, we’d love to continue our sessions with you.

Download PhysiApp from Google play or iTunes, and we will send you a link to log in. Or you can log in through your web browser. Then we will simply call you at your appointment time.

Returning to Running in the Post-natal period

Many women are keen to return to running after having their baby whether it be for a physical release or a mental one. It can be a challenging time, and depending on your birth experience, you may be struggling to determine how to get back into exercise and in fact, whether your body is ready for it.

Guidelines have recently been released by three internationally recognised physiotherapists for the safe return to running post-natally. This information has been fairly limited until now, and although they are "guidelines" only, they are a great place to start if you are considering hitting the pavement following the delivery of your baby.

Here is a little pictogram to give you an idea about what you should think about prior to exercise.

Key messages:

🤱Give your body 12 weeks prior to high impact activity

🍑 In the meantime, see a Pelvic Floor/Women's Health physiotherapist (6 weeks post-natal is optimal, but it's never too late!) to check for pelvic floor/musculo function

🚶‍♀️Start with easy, low impact activity and grade your return to exercise

💪Start building strength in the key muscle groups with functional/specific exercises

🤔Can you tick off all of the outlined considerations?

🏃‍♀️At 12 weeks, start with 2-3 minutes of running and build on it: eg Couch to 5km

If this sounds like you, come on in for your Post-natal assessment with Jamie (no matter how old your baby!!) or find a Pelvic Health Physio near you!

To round out Pelvic Organ Prolapse Awareness Month, here is the final piece of the puzzle. The Story of the Organs Part 3: Bladder.

June is not only Pelvic Organ Prolapse Awareness month, but this week is also Continence Awareness Week!

Continence NZ’s campaign features a video from brave Auckland mum and grandma Emma, who is speaking out about her own incontinence journey to encourage others to do the same. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to break through the taboo and have a ‘wee chat’ of your own. But don’t forget, its not just a bladder problem, bowel incontinence is also a common complaint. If you have anything you would like to discuss, don’t hesitate to get in touch with me, or your local Pelvic Health Physiotherapist to start your journey to a happier you!

You can watch the video featuring Emma’s story which you can play as a conversation starter, and can download our helpful resource about hosting a chat below...
