12 month prescriptions
As you will be aware the government has announced a national changed allowing some medications to be prescribed for up to 12 months from 1 February. We will continue to follow national and legal prescribing standards to ensure medications are used safely.
Here is some helpful information about what to expect:
1. Prescriptions longer than 3 months require an appointment:
Prescriptions longer than three months require a consultation with your GP specifically to discuss this. This gives your GP time to review your health needs carefully, and make sure a longer prescription is clinically appropriate for you. Without this review, we are unable to issue prescriptions longer than 3 months.
2. Not everyone will be eligible:
Longer prescriptions are not suitable for all patients or medications.
3. When longer prescriptions may be considered:
Prescriptions longer than 3 months may be considered after a GP appointment and clinical review, if:
• Your condition is stable and well controlled
• Your medication has remained unchanged for a long period
• Required monitoring is up to date and can continue reliably
• The medication is appropriate for long-term prescribing
• The appropriate screening requirements have been undertaken.
4. Ongoing monitoring still applies:
Even with a longer prescription, ongoing monitoring and regular reviews still apply. You must let us know of any changes to your health or if you have any concerns relating to your medication. Longer prescriptions may be adjusted or cancelled if your health or treatment change.
5. Collecting your script from the pharmacy:
Pharmacies will continue to dispense medicines in 3-month supplies (or up to 6 months for oral contraceptives).
You must collect the full length of your prescription from the same pharmacy. Longer prescriptions cannot be transferred between pharmacies.
These processes are in place to keep you safe and ensure high-quality care. If you would like to explore whether a longer prescription is suitable for you, please book an appointment to discuss with your GP.
