Warnings have been issued across parts of the North Island as Category 2 Cyclone Vaianu approaches New Zealand.

Forecasters warn 90–120mm of rain could fall in a short time, increasing the risk of flooding, slips, and dangerous conditions.

MetService says Cyclone Vaianu, currently northwest of Fiji, is expected to strengthen to Category 3 or higher before tracking toward Northland and Auckland this weekend, with potential for significant impact.

Heavy rain watches are in place for Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, and the Bay of Plenty.

Cyclone Maila (Category 3) in the Solomon Sea, is not expected to affect New Zealand.

❄️🔥 Winter Fire Safety Reminder - Keeping our community/hapori safe this winter | Te noho haumaru i tēnei takurua 🔥❄️

As the colder months settle in, we’re all reaching for heaters, fireplaces, and electric blankets to keep warm. While these are essentials in winter, they also increase the risk of house fires.
Aroha mai — this also brings increased fire risk.

A few simple steps can keep you and your whānau safe:

• 🔥 Keep heaters at least 1 metre away from anything that can burn (curtains, furniture, clothing)
• 🔥 Never leave fires or heaters unattended, especially overnight
• 🔥 Check electric blankets for wear and tear before use
• 🔥 Clean chimneys and flues before lighting your fire for the season
• 🔥 Don’t overload power boards
• 🔥 Make sure your smoke alarms are working – test them monthly

Winter is a time to stay warm—but more importantly, stay safe.
Ngā mea iti, he hua nui. Small actions make a big difference

Let’s look after each other this winter.💛
Mā tātou katoa te haumaru e tiaki
Together we keep each other safe

If you need advice or help with home fire safety (scan the QR Code poster below), reach out to your local brigade—we’re here for our community 💛

🔥🇺🇸 Fire Station Visits – USA Trip 🇺🇸🔥

While on holiday in the USA, I couldn’t help but check out a few local fire stations along the way. No matter where you are in the world, the sense of pride, professionalism, and community within the fire service is always the same.

It was awesome to see different setups, appliances, and ways of doing things—and to meet some great people who are just as passionate about the job as we are back home.

I was also incredibly humbled to be gifted patches, T-shirts, and even a commemorative coin—something I’ll definitely treasure.

A big thank you to the crews who took the time to chat and show me around. Always learning, always connecting 👨‍🚒👩‍🚒

Firefighters really are one big family, no matter the country.

Last night the Whatatutu Volunteer Fire Brigade travelled to Te Karaka for a combined training with several other local brigades from across the district.

The evening focused on:
🚒 First arriving appliance at a hazardous materials incident, including initial scene management followed by decontamination procedures.
🚒 Practical use of Enhanced Rescue Equipment, along with a demonstration of the plasma cutter in action.

Training together like this strengthens our ability to work as one team when responding to incidents across the region. It was a great opportunity to share knowledge, practise new skills, and build connections with neighbouring brigades who we often work alongside at incidents.

A big thank you to the wonderful Gisborne Operations Support team who finished the evening off with a fantastic BBQ dinner for everyone. Much appreciated! 👏🔥

Our volunteers train regularly to make sure we’re ready when our communities need us.

If you’ve ever thought about becoming a volunteer firefighter or supporting your local brigade, we’d love to hear from you. Come along to a training night (Wednesday evening 6 pm) and see if there’s a role for you in the Whatatutu Volunteer Fire Brigade.

Thanks to Evelyn our Op Support for taking photos 📸
