Great question - and one we get a lot!
When it comes to feeding horses, we’re really looking at how much of their diet comes from fibre (forage) vs concentrates (hard feed).
The golden rule? 👉 Fibre should make up the majority of your horse’s diet.
Think grass, hay, or fibre-based feeds like hay pellets.
Concentrates are there to top things up, used when your horse needs extra support for energy, condition, or workload.
There’s no one-size-fits-all ratio, as it also depends on your horse’s age, condition, metabolism, and how hard they’re working. But if you start with plenty of fibre and build from there, you’re on the right track.
This becomes especially important over winter, when grass is limited, making a high-fibre feed a great way to help fill the gap. 🌾
