Our manager Pauline’s story
I’ve been devoted to nursing since 1996 when I started as a caregiver at Norfolk Lodge Rest Home. My passion for elderly care began after my mum passed away at the age of 53, inspiring me to give back to the older generation. I completed an anatomy and physiology course, then earned my nursing degree in 2002 continuing to work at Norfolk Lodge throughout my studies. After graduating, I became a Registered Nurse there, and within 18 months stepped into a managerial role.
In 2003, our team from Norfolk Lodge Rest Home travelled to Wellington to present a scenario showcasing Norfolk Lodge Rest Home and Education. This presentation earned us a place in the finals of the New Zealand Aged Care Conference. We later entered again under the Education category, reaching the finalist stage three times in total — a proud recognition of our team’s commitment to quality care and education in aged care.
In 2021, after a challenging period at Norfolk Lodge, our team worked exceptionally hard and achieved a four-year Ministry of Health certification audit, which became a highlight of my nursing career. Since then, we have continued to perform strongly in subsequent Ministry of Health audits, and have also undergone two Ombudsman visits, both with excellent outcomes — a reflection of the continuous effort, teamwork, and high standards we uphold at Norfolk Lodge.
My husband works alongside me at Norfolk Lodge — he has been my rock, providing unwavering support and encouragement throughout my nursing journey. Together, we share the same dedication and passion for ensuring the wellbeing and comfort of every resident in our care.
Today, I continue to lead with the same compassion and commitment that first drew me to aged care — ensuring our residents receive high-quality, person-centred support while empowering our staff through education, collaboration, and a strong sense of purpose.
