Mackenzie’s story –
“Hi, I am desperate for help :( My baby is 7 weeks old and from two weeks she has spent most of her waking hours screaming/crying excessively. GP has said it’s colic and to just wait it out but we need more help”
When Mackenzie’s Mum brought her to me she explained that her labour had been extremely fast and that baby had been engaged for many weeks. In order to try to prevent premature delivery, Mum had been given a few doses of steroids, which had resulted in a lot of unpleasant side effects.
Since birth, Mackenzie would only sleep on her Mum, for very short periods. She was extremely jumpy and would startle and wake at any loud noise.
Feeding was an awful experience, with her gulping then choking on the milk, only to get so upset and hungry that they had to start all over. Anyone who has had a reflux/colic baby will know this vicious cycle well.
Poor little baby was a ball of tension, with her head and shoulders all bunched together, fists clenched in pain/frustration and her limbs contracted and rigid. Her cries were those of a baby in extreme distress rather than just a ‘normal’ upset baby cry.
During her first session I put my hands really lightly on the back of her neck and under her sacrum (lower back/tailbone area). Such a simple but effective treatment for compression in the cranial and neck bones, allowing the cranial nerves (Vagus in particular) space to function correctly.
Her little body started to relax in my hands, her arms started to flop out and she stopped feeding to beam up at Mum.
She had another session with me and two with an Osteopath. Since then Mackenzie has been ‘like a completely new baby’. She will lay in her bouncer, engage with her family, can go for walks in the pram, feed calmly and even sleep alone in her bassinet.
Thanks to my lovely client who recommended me to Mackenzie’s parents, you know who you are!
