Passed away at Summerset Falls Care Centre, Warkworth, after a short illness on 7th December 2025, aged 95. Dearly loved husband of Cheryl for 71 years. Treasured father of Jeffrey, Philip, Alison, and Ian. A loved father in law, and cherished by his 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Much loved by his wider extended family, and his community. “A mighty Totara has fallen”. Rest in Peace. How often have you said: "I don't need a funeral when I die"...but your family and loved ones do.
I sometimes wonder how families get through the heartbreak of farewelling their loved one, especially in a tragic or public circumstance. This tragic and heartbreaking loss is felt deeply by her family and friends. She will always be loved and remembered for her spirited nature and amazing love of life. Water cremation in NZ, also known as aquamation or alkaline hydrolysis, is an eco-friendly alternative to flame cremation that uses a combination of water, heat, and alkaline chemicals to break down a body over a few hours. This process results in a liquid byproduct that is safely returned to the water cycle and a powder of bone fragments that are given to the family. The service is now legally available, with the first in New Zealand having opened in Christchurch. Water cremation may be slightly less expensive than flame cremation as there is no requirement for a casket. It also has significant environmental benefits producing 90% less carbon emissions and using less energy.
