🌿YOGA AND SELF HEALING🌿

This week at we explore self healing and invite space for the inner voice that bubbles up from the deeper, stiller place at the core of the heart, if we allow it room to breathe.

I am inspired by another beautiful weekend wānanga with

The practice of mirimiri is Māori bodywork and healing - healing for all parts of us - the tinana/body, hinengaro/mind, wairua/spirit and of course the ripple effects of healing ourselves lap against the shores of our whānau, loved ones and wider community.

I’m inspired by radical self responsibility for our own healing. We can be supported yes - absolutely - that is crucial, but the work starts within.

I am inspired by the idea of a world where we are guided by our manawa/heart first and hinengaro/mind second. Listening deeply to the whispers on the wind that guide us - whatumanawa.

I am inspired by healing modalities that really really work. I am experiencing again and again, that with the right intention and the right environment healing works and it can be quick, if you want it to be.

I am inspired to continue to gather and nurture the tools in my kete to support healing for and with others.

I AM INSPIRED!

Exploring this ... Just like we explore our mats, minds, hearts and hip flexors in yoga. It is called a yoga practice for a reason. It isn’t supposed to be perfect.

Some days the brave and beautiful work of meeting yourself is hard. Sometimes rewarding and joyful. Always brave. To deeply truly get into the ring with yourself : the thoughts and insecurities and awkwardness and whatever else is lurking in the ring. I think it is f-ing brave.

I feel the way I am meeting myself on the deepest plains thus far is brave.

I think anytime someone walks in a yoga studio for the first or 1000th time is brave.

But it is so worth it. Meeting yourself with what is is a gift for me, for you, for community, for family, for lovers, for work colleagues. It’s a gift for the earth who so desperately needs our love and attention through awareness of interconnection.

Meet me there? In practice … practising yoga and what it means to be human.

🌱🌙 I am so delighted to be teaching in Poneke Wellington 🌙🌱

I found my yogic home on the Awhi studio floor when I first arrived in Aotearoa 4 years ago. The breath, sound and movement (and heat) on rainy Wellington nights was a blessing whilst I found my feet in a new place 👣. And navigating winters without insulation and central heating (wtf)…

Awhi draws upon Tā Mason Durie’s Te Whare Tapa Whā model of holistic Māori hauora//wellbeing. This framework spoke to me… needing to have all 4 walls of your inner whare//house to be standing strong makes sense in the most simple and esoteric of ways. We are interconnected and I love the offer to bring it all to the mat and the collective to be felt and nourished… the hinengaro//mind, the physical Tinana//body, wairua// what I understand as soul, the spirit and whānau//community and family. 🌱🌙

I stand in reverence to the roots of this framework, developed to support people to better understand the world of Māori.

I am now offering my own style of yogic framework -a practice for people to hang whatever they like from. I also stand in reverence to yogic teachings and a daily lived practice and commitment to be awake!

So with all of that …. I am stoked 🥝 to be holding a space at Awhi for self inquiry and possibly invite some unfolding for others.

I am stepping back from guiding a regular koha slot. Space is being made for births and deaths and immersions of new offerings. And let’s face it, most community halls in Wellington are cold as.

I will mostly be posting on my Instagram so if you want it, please find me there.

🌀I am stopping my koha yoga classes on Monday evenings in Newtown🌀

I’m stepping back from teaching at Cook island hall on Mondays.

Thank you to everyone who has carved out the time for your yoga practice on Monday eves. And thank you joining me in your practice.

I’m hoping that this class will continue for the community and will post if someone picks it up for the next phase of Monday koha yoga offerings.

This week we explore transitions.

As someone who has always been searching, seeking, moving and striving I feel well versed in transition. I have always been ready for the next thing. Leaping over the fence at the end of the garden. Grasping for the new and the intangible.
Listening to my soul whispering on the wind.

And yet, when I say well versed, I really mean I am unlearning the fickle art of transition.

I am unlearning preparation.

I am unlearning planning and procedure.

I am learning there is no linear movement from A to B. No way to tick off ‘change’ and transition through life with a list of accomplishments.

There is no way to neatly feel that I am here now, and it is done. Achieved. Completed. That is not the way of the soul. The soul is ancient, eternal and wild in its nature. It doesn’t like structures and known easily definable entities.

I am learning that transitioning means an unpeeling and discovering of new layers.

I am learning that I cannot control the waves… but I can learn to surf.

I am learning that I have no check list – but that I have gathered the tools.

Yoga asana can be our ’in’ to inquiry. Using breath, sound and movement to transition from shape to shape, we can open up the inner dialogue about transition and change. Whatever you’re feeling and wherever you may or may not be going. We never really stand still… the soul is eternal and it is wild.

except everything, which is what I am

what is yoga if it is not real and of this moment?

‘poses’ feels to me like something that should look a certain way

the mat is not a stage, it’s a map without borders

i want an opening to formlessness and colouring outside the lines

‘practice’ … well that is anything

inquiring deeply within and being with what is

my practice is for me. it’s for the people I live with, love with, journey with and rub alongside airports with. it’s also for the people I offer yoga to

🔥 what’s in the way is the way 🔥

What if everything that is in the way offers a possibility to turn towards ourselves?

This isn’t a ‘trust the process’, look outside yourself, spiritual bypassing mantra of me hoping everything will work out and align align align with the divine!

It is an invitation to meet what I perceive to be ‘in the way’ and be curious about using it descend in and through myself. Through the heart.

Yoga today is…..

Flailing about and getting it wrong. Moving and twisting and dancing and pondering. Clearing out the subconscious and making compost.

In this afternoon’s practice I felt on the verge of tears, sensing and giving space to the things submerged - like a shipwreck growing barnacles way beneath the surface of what is seen. I felt inspired to write about the love between me and my best male friend. I also felt supercharged up for the transition I’m experiencing and the creative juices started to flow. I was planning for future offerings and also sensed how much I am projecting and imagining the future and what will happen and where I will be.

This is a snapshot of the mind and feelings (note nothing here about physical sensations - that was there too). And this was all in 30 minutes.

Does that sound exhausting to you?

It may do… but not to me. All this and more is lurking beneath in the briny depths of the subconscious and bubbling away in the blazing fire of the soul. There is ‘stuff’ constantly ready to be felt, processed and moved through. A sushi train of your subconscious if you will… ready to be sampled, digested and dissolved.

The subconscious is like a bin with finite capacity. It needs emptying….. use its contents to make sweet sweet compost!

Creating space to feel what is there and move through what is arising is nectar to my mind, body and soul.

Beautiful family, beautiful spines.

Nourishing the spine with back bends is crucial for vitality, flexibility and being able to stand true and tall in the world.

The spine is the super information highway carrying all the data and messages our bodies need to know throughout each inch of our glorious forms.

A strong spine helps us to be erect in life. To retain vitality. To move with purpose and intention. To stand true and strong and also bend when necessary, like the most graceful of willow trees.

Nourishing the spine to be grounded in time and space reminds me of my current trip home, grounding with family. My whanau, my roots, are woven throughout the central column of my being, supporting me to be strong, graceful and flexible when I need support.

Beautiful support, beautiful life.
