How often should you float? 🧐

The honest answer: it depends.

If it’s your first time, we usually recommend 2–3 floats fairly close together. Your first float is often about getting familiar with the environment , learning how to settle your body and mind. By the second or third float, most people relax much more quickly and experience a deeper float.

After that, the right frequency comes down to your goals.

Some people float monthly as part of their self-care routine. Others float weekly to help manage stress, sleep, recovery, or chronic pain.

And some of our members float multiple times a week.

Our Unlimited Float Membership was created for people who want to make floating a consistent part of their routine, much like going to the gym or practicing meditation. The more familiar your body becomes with the experience, the easier it is to drop into deep relaxation.

The only frequency we don’t recommend?

Only floating once.

Your best float is often still ahead of you.

Almost 10 years ago, Float Well opened with just two single float tanks and a simple goal: give people a quiet place to truly switch off.

A year later we added two double float tanks so people could share the experience with a partner, friend, or family member. Or have more space to stretch out.

Last year we made another big shift: replacing one of the original single tanks with contrast therapy, bringing hot and cold into the mix for recovery, circulation, and resilience.

It’s been incredible to see how the space has evolved alongside the needs of our community.

So now we’re curious…

This is what the first float tank looked like.

In the 1950s, neuroscientist John C. Lilly built the first sensory deprivation tank while researching how the brain behaves without external stimulation. Early designs required breathing masks and looked more like a science experiment than a wellness practice.

But the discovery was powerful: when the body is fully supported in warm saltwater and free from constant sensory input, the nervous system shifts into a deeply restorative state.

Decades later, float tanks have evolved into the calm, comfortable float tanks you see today.

Different design.
Same powerful reset.

You feel it before you even check in.

The light. The quiet. The way the space gently slows you down.

Float Well was intentionally designed to shift your nervous system the moment you walk through the door: high ceilings, soft tones, natural textures, space to breathe.

Because your recovery doesn’t start in the tank.
It starts the second you arrive.

This is your exhale.

At Float Well, our standard float has always been 60 minutes inside the tank, and that’s intentional.

Your nervous system doesn’t switch off the moment the door closes. The first 10–20 minutes are usually just your body arriving. Your mind is still processing the day. Your muscles are still holding subtle tension. Your breath is still adjusting.

Then something shifts.

For most people, the deepest part of their float happens from the 45-minute mark onward. That’s when the nervous system truly begins to down-regulate. When thinking softens. When the body passively lets go instead of trying to relax.

That depth is why we give you the time.

And if you’re a member? Every membership includes a complimentary 30-minute add-on to any float. So you can flow for up to 90 minutes at no extra cost.

Because sometimes 60 minutes feels good…
And sometimes you want to stay longer.

We’ve even had a handful of guests float for three hours. That’s we call a marathon float!

One of the most common questions we get:
“Is it safe to float while pregnant?”

Yes. Floating is very different from lying flat on a hard surface. The water is set to 35°C (skin temperature), so your body isn’t working to warm up or cool down. And because you’re completely buoyant, there’s no pressure on your spine, hips, or vena cava. You’re not compressed, you’re supported.

For many mums, it’s the first time in weeks their body feels weightless.

And then there’s the part that’s harder to explain.

Floating while pregnant can feel like a womb within a womb.
You, held by warm water.
Baby, held by you.

When your nervous system softens, theirs does too. When you slow your breathing, you can feel the subtle connection and the shared rhythm.

If you’re navigating pregnancy aches, poor sleep, or just craving an uninterrupted hour to tune in, this can be a beautiful addition to your care.

Always check with your lead maternity carer if you have specific medical considerations. But for most healthy pregnancies, floating is not only safe, it’s deeply restorative.
