Wellington District Police have long been wonderful supporters of our region’s children’s hospital and we were thrilled to welcome them to Te Wao Nui this morning with a huge delivery of cosy pyjamas for tamariki and rangatahi in hospital care.

These warm winter PJs were generously donated to Wellington Hospitals Foundation Jammies in June Appeal by members of the wider Wellington District Police whānau, including teams from: Wellington Central Police & Central Communications, Royal NZ Police College, Police National Headquarters, the National Dive Squad, Fi****ms Registry, Child Protection (Petone), Kapiti and the Kapiti Digital Centre, Evidence Based Policing and Wellness Team as well as the Hutt, Petone and Wairarapa Police teams.

Special thanks to Dan, Karl, Lisa, Shanee and Georgia for their mahi in coordinating the police appeal. 💙

Gorgeous 6 year old Esme was recently rushed to Wellington Hospital with a severe respiratory illness. It was a frightening time for her and her whānau - but cosy new pyjamas, a Tiaki soft toy and colouring set brought a little comfort and calm during her unexpected stay.

Your support makes a huge difference to families when illness strikes out of the blue - and Esme wanted to say a special thank you. 💛

❄️ Help keep sick kids warm this winter! ❄️

Wellington Hospitals Foundation has launched its annual Jammies in June Appeal to support tamariki cared for at Te Wao Nui children’s hospital, as well as Kenepuru and Hutt Hospitals.

By donating online, you’ll help us buy cosy new PJs in the right sizes as children are seen in our hospitals over the next few months.

👉 Please Donate today at: https://whf.org.nz/donate/

Respiratory illnesses are a major reason children are admitted to hospital in winter, with many arriving without pyjamas. Cold, damp homes make young kids even more vulnerable, but staying warm helps their immune systems fight off infection.

Let’s wrap sick kids in warmth, comfort and care this winter!

Thank you💛

Hospital stays can be tough for little ones, like three-year-old Coby (pictured), who is far from home for surgery and also sad about missing his big sister’s school farm day. Cuddling a soft toy can work wonders, helping ease the anxiety and fear that comes with being in a hospital.

Last year alone, nearly 4,000 Tiaki toys were gifted to young patients across the regional Te Wao Nui Child Health Service. These toys provide not just comfort, but are also a welcome distraction during scary or unpleasant medical procedures.

Te Wao Nui features a whānau of nine kaitiaki characters inspired by New Zealand’s unique flora and fauna, each one dedicated to supporting children and young people throughout their hospital journey. Tiaki, is modelled on New Zealand’s Pohutukawa and is the main guardian and official mascot of the regional child health service.

Thanks to the very generous support of the Herbert Teagle Masonic Perpetual Trust and Freemasons New Zealand, Wellington Hospitals Foundation can continue to provide these special toys to children, making their hospital experiences a little brighter and a lot more comforting.💚

“The staff are really nice, and it feels less hospitally,” explained a young patient, perfectly capturing what makes Te Wao Nui Regional Children’s Hospital so special. These simple yet heartfelt words reflect a place where clinical care meets compassion, and where the support of the community has created a bright and welcoming environment for children and their whānau.

This morning, we had the great pleasure of welcoming benefactors Sir Mark Dunajtschik and Dorothy Spotswood to celebrate the hospital’s second anniversary. With a large turnout of staff, hospital leaders expressed their deep gratitude to Mark and Dorothy, reflecting on the hospital's profound impact on thousands of young patients and their families.

Te Wao Nui's thoughtfully designed spaces promote recovery, providing children with the best possible care in a warm, positive environment. Parents often express how calming the atmosphere is, and how the play areas allow children to be kids - even while undergoing treatment far from home. Hospital staff also value the building’s purposeful design and dedicated learning spaces, and the layout fosters greater collaboration between Child Health Staff.

A vital part of bringing this vision to life was Wellington Hospitals Foundation $10 million community fundraising to outfit and equip the interior of the new hospital.

As we celebrate this milestone, we are reminded that Te Wao Nui is a testament to the power of partnerships between healthcare professionals, benefactors, and the community. It’s a place where healing happens not just through medicine, but also through care, connection, and support.💛
