Salty snacks take most of the blame, but everyday staples like bread are huge contributors to hidden salt in the Kiwi diet. Adults in Aotearoa often consume nearly double the daily recommended limit of 5g. Protect your heart health by checking supermarket labels and picking a loaf with a lower sodium count. Have you ever thought about how much salt is hiding in your daily bread? πŸžπŸ§‚

If you manage high cholesterol with statins, it is vital to know how they affect heart imaging. These medications work by stabilising soft plaque and turning it into calcium. This process actually makes the plaque less likely to rupture, which is a great outcome for your health. However, it also means your 'Calcium Score' might go up on a scan. That is why New Zealand cardiologists typically do not recommend repeat scans after you start treatment. The rising score usually reflects the medication doing its job rather than an increase in risk. Were you aware that a higher score after starting treatment can sometimes be a positive sign?

Your birthday cake might say 40, but your heart could be telling a different story. 'Heart Age' is a simple way to understand your risk of heart disease. If your heart is older than you are, it means you have a higher risk of health issues compared to others your age. Here in Aotearoa, knowing when to check is crucial. National guidelines often suggest that Māori, Pacific, and South Asian peoples start these checks earlier. That usually means age 30 for men and 40 for women in those groups. Factors like blood pressure and cholesterol are the big drivers that speed up aging. The good news is that you can change them. Unlike other places that look at a 10-year risk, NZ doctors often focus on the next 5 years to give you immediate goals. Have you ever booked a heart risk assessment to find out your true numbers? πŸ«€

Loud snoring and daytime tiredness are often dismissed, but they could be signs of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. This condition has serious implications for your heart. When breathing repeatedly stops and starts during the night, oxygen levels drop. This causes stress hormones to surge and places significant strain on the cardiovascular system. Over time, this process creates a real risk for high blood pressure or heart failure. It is a common issue for many Kiwis that often goes undiagnosed. recognising signs like gasping in your sleep is a vital first step. Did you know your sleep habits could be affecting your heart this much?
