Yes it may be Friday 13th, but we were lucky today. Today, we have come across another cafe that makes their own hot cross buns. Janeen and I had been scouring the streets all week long and were about to put up with another odd flavour concoction from the supermarket (home studies have proven the caramello ones are disappointingly gross).
Puku Pies to the rescue! Beating the queues this morning, I picked myself up a Mince & Cheese pie and a 6pack of their own hot cross buns. Before we get into the discussion of the buns, a massive shout out to the staff there. Wonderful service, very personable and friendly. A massive delight.

PREPARATION:
We all toasted with butter.

TASTE:
There is no skimping with the fruit or special hot cross bun spicy goodness. It is not too strong to be overwhelming, but strong enough to chill any desire to binge on the whole 6 pack.

TEXTURE:
Perfect. Great doughiness.

PRICE:
I was too excited about finding the hot cross buns and talking to the friendly staff that I really do not know exactly how much. $25.50 for the 6pk and a mince and cheese pie (complete with instructions on how to reheat at lunch time).

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS:
Due to the strong flavours, the after taste did linger like that painful couple at the end of a party. However, it was nice so it's the couple that helps clean up so still a win.

Surprisingly, we are struggling to find another local cafe / bakery that makes their own hot cross bun. If anyone can recommend another place, we'd love to check it out.
Thus, we went back to Woolworths where we picked up the flavour that it started it all. We had seen an ad for the Indulgent Mudcake Filled Hot Cross Buns and figured that looked like a bit of us. Surpringly, it was only this week that we finally sourced a packet.
Here are the thoughts.

PREPARATION: Considering we knew of the gooey centre, we approached it in different ways.
Rachael & Jim: Microwave
Janeen: Toasted
Fraser: Fresh

TASTE: The amalgamation of the hot cross bun & mudcake flavouring resulted in very little hot cross bun taste and yet not sweet enough for the mudcake.

TEXTURE: Fine

PRICE: $8.00 / 4pk - $2.00 ea (on special)

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS: There are better ways to get your chocolate this Easter. This is too messy, not tasty enough and leaves your teeth looking like you've enjoyed years of chewing to***co.

Last week I showed you a chunk yet light frame. This week I'm going to show you a chunky yet light frame. It's a consistency regime my running acumen craves.
Lazaro is a beautifully oversized frame with vivid colouring delightfully named 'Sea Turtle'. Lazaro even has nosepads so itty bitty noses also get the opportunity to fall in love and take her home.

I got artsy with this week's photo shoot. The flavours inspired me.

PREPARATION:
Rachael, Janeen, Fraser and Jim - toasted with buttery spread of choice.

TASTE:
Comments ranged from "oh yeah" to "that was perfect". Excellent balance of spices with good fruit ratio. Janeen pointed out there's no peel, which she hates, because she's a queen but with wussy tendencies.

TEXTURE:
Not too fluffy, not too dense.

PRICE:
$7.60 / 6pk - $1.27ea

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS:
This is what a hot cross bun should be. Good size, fruit content and toasty yumminess. Guys you should've seen Janeen's face when I commented that the English Rose at home would love this with marmite on top. Hilarious. While himself goes savoury, I'd happily throw raspberry jam at this hot cross bun and Janeen did consider that Nutella could be a fine thing.

After that big and chunky look without the weight? Souda could be the frame for you. Handmade in Berlin, Souda is 3D printed with Mylon which is a light and durable high tech material. The Souda rocks a patented screwless hinge design (same same but different to their stainless steel screwless hinge design).
The Souda really is the best of all worlds with it's strong presence and lightweight finish.

Aro Bakery Since 1998 bringing the heat this week with their traditional hot cross buns.

PREPARATION:
Janeen was in charge of the toaster this week so there were zero squishies and excellent toasty finish. Janeen rhymes with Queen. Everyone had butter except Rachael who stuck with the DF spread.

TASTE:
Fruit was doled out sparingly, so the peel wasn't obvious. The glaze was quite sweet.

TEXTURE:
Like my cats, they are delightfully dense.

PRICE:
$17.40 a pk = $2.90 ea

Local cafes are on the board!
Dough have their Hot Cross Buns available individually or as 6 packs. There's only one flavour which makes a refreshing change from the smorgasbord of oddity available at the supermarkets.

PREPARATION:
Everyone - toasted with butter (Rachael realised too late but figured it'd be a problem shared and charged on).

TASTE:
It is a truly decent traditional hot cross bun. A tasty balance of flavours and exceptional amount of fruit. It does have peel which can be a dealbreaker for some wussies.

TEXTURE:
Even if you toast the absolute life out of it **cough Jim cough**, this bun has a very decent texture. Fluffy, almost buttery.

PRICE:
Individual $4.50
6 pack $18 - $3.00 ea

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS
Game is on other cafes! Dough has come in hot with a delicious traditional hot cross bun which is noticeably bigger in size than the ones we've been necking over the last couple of weeks. Great price. Would love to have another with some raspberry jam. Fight me.

FRAME OF THE WEEK!!!

This week I bring you the brazen Akoni Eyewear cat-eye, Sagitta. Full acetate frame with titanium gold accents, we have the Sagitta in N**e Grey Swirl and Burgundy Gold.
It's got the shape.
It's got the colour.
It's got the blingy little accents.
