Kia Ora everyone!

Little post Christmas update for ya!🎄

I finished the Whanganui River section with the wonderful Koen, Jonne, Lucille, Roisín, and my paddling buddy Jonathan. 🛶

It was an epic trip! And it means I've done around 950km of the North Island, out of a total of 1700km.

Having a bit of a break now over January and will let this page rest until I'm ready to come back into it! Should be about mid Feb...

I've skipped ahead a little bit, and today I'm headed down to Whakahoro to start the Whanganui River Canoe section with some friends from earlier on the trail! 🏞🌊🛶

Very excited to have some company again, and to have some last adventurous fun just before Christmas.

Even though many people told me to skip it, I really enjoyed the Auckland to Hamilton section! Some real highlights in there, including:

- A very long day ending in going over the mighty Hakarimata Range,

- Staying at the Kandoit Earthship straight after

- Seeing the newly wedded Reon and Huia Max Rose right after that!

Currently setting up my tent at Rangiriri Hotel after a surprisingly beautiful day following the Waikato River south! 🏞⬇️

It was really interesting, and a little grueling, to walk across the whole of Auckland. The sun has been no joke lately. 🌞

But the highlight of the last couple days has been staying with my fantastic cousins and eating lots of delicious meals that weren't once dehydrated!

Onwards to everyones favourite city, Hamilton! 🏙

I'm back!

No journal today but trust that I have launched back into the trail with full enthusiasm now knowing all the secrets of the universe 🧘‍♂️

The retreat was super interesting, and a bit of its own challenge at times, but lots to take away. Might have lost some calf definition and earnt back a kilo or two of delicious vegetarian food.

Excited to reach Auckland tomorrow and then carry on as far south as I can get before Santa arrives! 🎅🎁🎄

Had a difficult day today but as always the beautiful people in my life get me through it. 🌈

The journal got a bit of added character today, and I hitchhiked my way over to Makarau, where I'm starting a 10 day, silent Vipassana meditation retreat from tomorrow!

That should be an adventure in itself, and a whole different kind of endurance, so you won't hear from me for 10 days. If you don't hear from me for a month I might simply have ascended to a higher spiritual plane 🧘‍♂️

Bit of an introspective post today! 🥸

Walking through so many absolutely beautiful parts of the country, and meeting lots of wonderful people.

The last couple days have been a bit challenging, and became a bit of a struggle with my motivation and morale. Currently finishing a long lovely rest day up above Pakiri Bay and I think it was exactly what I needed! 🛌

BIG photo dump today after a beautiful week hiking south through Whangārei and down to Waipu! 🌄🚶‍♂️🏞

Some highlights:

- Being joined by my FANTASTIC girlfriend Ella was a huge morale boost

- Being exceptionally well looked after once again, (even given strawberries!) by the unmatchable Katy Mandeno and Mike

- Getting a crisp, cold, roadside beer from a stranger driving by as my mate Will and I walked to Whangarei

Lots to appreciate along the trail! A little bit less now that Ella has gone off home, but we push on!

Through Kerikeri, Waitangi, and off to Ōakura for my stay tonight! 🇳🇿

Meeting lots of lovely people, both hikers and trail angels. Visiting Waitangi was an absolute highlight of the trip so far, even if I sound a bit angry in this journal entry.

Please, if you feel compelled to defend golf in the comments, do so! Maybe I'm uneducated 🏌‍♂️⛳️

Had the pleasure of staying at Krishna Sanctuary the other day, very very good to rest the joints, especially before I delved into the Northland Forests region!

In Kerikeri now, staying with friends and learning to take my time a bit more and take my rest days.

Difficult to know what an appropriate amount of hurt in the body is for something like this, but erring on the side of caution!

Having an absolutely brilliant time, just made it over the beautiful and muddy and beautifully muddy Raetea Forest. A very nice change after a bit of road walking and the beach.

Proud to announce I am two full days in and alive!

90 mile beach is definitely loooong and really hard yakka but along with a few other lovely people I am trucking along!

I am actually really really enjoying it so far, absolutely beautiful part of the country, even if it does seem to be 90% sand. 🏝️⛱️
