KAWAREHE KAINGA MĀORI – 16 new Affordable Rental Homes Under Development!!

Following on from the opening of our Tūkōkeke Kāinga at Golf Links Rd, in partnership with Kawarehe Trust, Adventure Solutionz and Te Tohu o Te Ora o Ngāti Awa, we are pleased to announce the commencement of the infrastructure and build programme for Kawarehe Kainga Māori at Huna Rd Whakatane.

Having completed archaeological surveys to the satisfaction of Heritage NZ a further karakia was carried out last week with the Trustees of Kawarehe and key stakeholders witnessing the formal process of “turning the sod”.

Stage 1 will consist of 16 Affordable Rental homes worth an estimated cost of $10.4m. Funded by Ministry of Housing Urban Development and the Kawarehe Trust the project will be completed by June 2026.

Building Plans incorporate the relocation of the existing Lawson Homestead from its current site over looking the Paroa Rugby grounds to another part of the site to create a central community hub for the overall development. The homestead will be surrounded by park-like features and a further:
•4 x 2-bedroom duplex (8 units)
•3 x 3-bedroom standalone homes
•1 x 3-bedroom duplex (2 units)
•2 x 4-bedroom standalone homes

The Affordable Housing programme is a hand up toward home ownership. This is a subsidized rental programme that is targeted at whanau who are working and on a pathway toward home ownership. Whanau are able to apply to the tenancy management company He Tohu Kainga www.hetohukainga.org.nz. for occupancy of homes. There is an existing waiting list so whanau are encouraged to get in early.

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa (TRONA) has today received the Supreme Court’s judgment in its appeal against the proposed Otakiri water-bottling expansion in Whakatāne.

The Supreme Court, by a 3–2 majority, has dismissed Ngāti Awa’s appeal. The Chief Justice and Justice Glazebrook, however, found in favour of Ngāti Awa, recognising the importance of te mana me te mauri o te wai and the role of iwi as kaitiaki.

While disappointed by the outcome, Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa acknowledges the strength of support and dedication shown throughout this lengthy process by its people, legal team, and wider iwi.

“Although this marks the end of the legal journey, our duty as kaitiaki will always continue today and with our future generations. We remain steadfast in upholding te mana me te mauri o te wai and the wellbeing of our land, water and people across our rohe,” said Reuben Araroa, Manahautū of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa.

TRONA will take time to consider the judgment and its implications. The Rūnanga extends its deep gratitude to the many past, present, and future leaders who continue to uphold the iwi’s enduring responsibility as kaitiaki of the Ngāti Awa taiao.

What an incredible achievement by our Te Tohu o Te Ora o Ngāti Awa whānau who pushed beyond their comfort zones and conquered Iron Māori!

Iron Māori was created to uplift health and wellbeing, encouraging us to reconnect with our tinana, hinengaro, wairua, and whānau. Every participant showed what it means to embrace the wero, dig deep, and prove that anything is possible when you commit to the journey.

We are incredibly proud to have had 4 relay teams, 5 individual quarter runners, 1 individual half marathon runner and 2 participants complete the individual quarter event.
A special mihi to:

Teena, who smashed the Half Marathon and claimed 1st Female in her age division – an outstanding result!
Joseph, who tackled the Quarter Solo Run and placed 2nd in his age division – ka mau te wehi!
Jade & Fredom, who each completed the Individual Quarter in under 5 hours, proving that determination wins every time.

“Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini.”

Part 2

Taumata Kahawai is the traditional Pa of Taiwhakaea I located above the township of Whakatane. The Pa was the best vantage point for seeing the shimmering silver of the Kahawai swimming in the waters below hence its name. Taiwhakaea I would blow his Pukaea across to Moutohora signalling to his men to bring fresh water from the Island.

Many generations earlier his grandfather Irapeke would blow his Pukaea to call his warriors together to prepare for battle at Te Pahitaua the site of our organisation today.

Last month we were privileged to unveil “Taumata Kahawai” created for us in Ngati Awa style by Thomas Carroll of Ngati Maru Hauraki taonga puoro maker and practitioner. Taumata Kahawai is made from a single piece of matai, wrapped in kiekie and covered in Kōkōwai. The taonga sits upon red deer stag horns from Omataroa sourced from Joseph Pryor and hangs in Moutohora at Te Pahitaua.
