Do you know your local marae’s emergency plan?
Marae often act as community hubs during emergencies. Knowing their plan helps your whānau stay safe and connected.

✔️ Ask your marae about their procedures
✔️ Know gathering points and emergency contacts
✔️ Keep your whānau in the loop
Strong marae plans strengthen whānau safety. TMAT encourages all communities in Te Moana a Toi to connect with their local marae.

He waka eke noa – we are all in this together.

Is your grab bag ready?
In an emergency, having a grab bag can make all the difference. Make sure it has the essentials for you and your whānau:
✔️ Water & non-perishable kai
✔️ First aid kit & medications
✔️ Warm clothing & blankets
✔️ Torch & spare batteries
✔️ Important documents & contact list

Check your bag regularly and make sure everyone in your whānau knows where it is.
Prepared whānau = safer whānau.

Who actually responds in a crisis?

In many cases across Aotearoa New Zealand, it’s our people who respond first.
Our marae become places of shelter.
Our whanaungatanga becomes the response plan.
Emergency management isn’t just a system it’s relationships.
Have you connected with your local marae about their emergency plan?

Emergency vs Disaster

He aha te rerekētanga?
Both are serious.
Both can impact our whānau.
But they are not the same.

An emergency is a serious event that affects individuals or a small number of whānau and can usually be managed within our hapori, with local support and services.

A disaster is larger in scale. It impacts many whānau at once and stretches our ability to respond, requiring support beyond our rohe.

Understanding the difference matters.
Because whether it’s an emergency or a disaster, being whakarite (prepared) strengthens our ability to tiaki our people.

It’s a whakaaro many of us have.

We feel safe in our homes.
We trust our community.
We hope emergencies happen somewhere else.
But the reality is, emergencies don’t choose where they happen.
Flooding. Fires. Medical emergencies. Natural disasters.
Being prepared isn’t about living in fear.
It’s about protecting what matters most, our whānau.
Shifting our mindset from
“It won’t happen to us”
to
“If it does, we’re ready”
can make all the difference.
💙 Let’s start the kōrero.
Are you prepared?
