Emergency vs Disaster

He aha te rerekētanga?
Both are serious.
Both can impact our whānau.
But they are not the same.

An emergency is a serious event that affects individuals or a small number of whānau and can usually be managed within our hapori, with local support and services.

A disaster is larger in scale. It impacts many whānau at once and stretches our ability to respond, requiring support beyond our rohe.

Understanding the difference matters.
Because whether it’s an emergency or a disaster, being whakarite (prepared) strengthens our ability to tiaki our people.

It’s a whakaaro many of us have.

We feel safe in our homes.
We trust our community.
We hope emergencies happen somewhere else.
But the reality is, emergencies don’t choose where they happen.
Flooding. Fires. Medical emergencies. Natural disasters.
Being prepared isn’t about living in fear.
It’s about protecting what matters most, our whānau.
Shifting our mindset from
“It won’t happen to us”
to
“If it does, we’re ready”
can make all the difference.
💙 Let’s start the kōrero.
Are you prepared?

🚨 What is an emergency?

An emergency is a serious and unexpected situation that needs immediate action.
It could be:
🔥 A house fire
🌊 Flooding
🚑 A medical emergency
🌍 A natural disaster
In those moments, knowing what to do and where to go makes all the difference.
Pātai for you:
👉 Do you know your emergency plan?
👉 Have you connected with your local marae about theirs?
👉 In an emergency, who would you call? Where would you go?
Over the next few posts, we’ll be sharing simple information to help our community be ready just in case.
Preparedness protects our people

🚶‍♀️ Taha Tinana | Physical wellbeing supports mental wellbeing
Looking after your tinana doesn’t have to be complicated.
Gentle movement, regular kai, hydration, sleep, and rest all help support your mental health.

Small, consistent acts of care can strengthen this wall of your whare over time.

✨ Taha Wairua | Caring for your spirit
Taha wairua speaks to identity, belonging, and meaning.
For many of us, this is strengthened through whakapapa, te reo Māori, karakia, time in nature, or moments of stillness.
When your wairua is nourished, it supports your hinengaro and the whole whare

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Taha Whānau | Staying connected
Strong connections help hold up our whare.

Checking in on whānau, friends, or kaumātua can make a real difference to someone’s day.
📲 Tag someone you’d like to check in on today or send them a private message to let them know you’re thinking of them.

🧠 Taha Hinengaro | Mental & emotional wellbeing

Taha hinengaro is about our thoughts, emotions, and how we cope with life’s pressures.
Stress, sadness, and overwhelm are part of being human, especially when carrying responsibilities for whānau and community.
Taking time to rest your mind, kōrero with someone you trust, or seek tautoko is a strength, not a weakness.

🌿 Mental Health Awareness | Te Whare Tapa Whā 🌿
Our hauora is like a whare, when each wall is supported, we are supported.
This February, Te Moana a Toi is focusing on Te Whare Tapa Whā, a Māori model of wellbeing that recognises the connection between hinengaro, whānau, wairua, and tinana.
Looking after our mental health means caring for the whole whare, not just one wall.

Te rā o Waitangi
Waitangi Day marks the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in 1840, a foundational agreement between Māori and the Crown. It is a day to reflect on our shared history, honour Te Tiriti, and recommit to its principles of partnership, protection, and participation.
For Te Moana a Toi, Te Tiriti continues to guide our mahi as we work alongside iwi and communities to support hauora and wellbeing across the rohe.

What do Te Moana a Toi whānau days look like?
✨ He rā whakanuia mo ngā kaumātua ✨
Our team attended the Kaumātua Whakanuia hosted by Tūwharetoa ki Kawerau Hau Ora at the Kawerau Town Hall.
The hall was buzzing all day with aroha, waiata and incredible performances from six rōpū across the rohe, a true celebration of our kaumātua, identity and wellbeing.
Around 250–300 people gathered to enjoy whakawhanaungatanga, entertainment, and kōrero about hauora.
A big mihi to Nikorima Broughton and the team for bringing the community together in such a powerful way.
Ngā mihi to everyone who shared their voices, stories, and presence

Kaumātua pride was shining. 💛👵🏽🧓🏽
