Local Company recognised at Steel Awards
A local company, set up only four years ago, has done well at the Steel Construction New Zealand (SCNZ) Excellence in Steel Awards held in Auckland on 14 November.
Troy Hesketh, who completed his apprenticeship at NZ Structural & Engineering, was awarded Highly Commended in the Apprentice of the Year category.
This is what his nomination said about him. βTroy is known for his confidence, passion and technical skill, constantly seeking opportunities to learn and grow. Inventive and composed under pressure, he tackles challenges with ease while motivating and supporting his colleagues.β
SCNZ noted that βTroyβs achievement reflects not only his personal dedication and skill but also the commitment of Whanganui-based NZ Structural & Engineering to developing local talent. His recognition on a national stage demonstrates that world-class apprentices are being nurtured in Whanganui.β The company normally has up to three apprentices, but this is the first time one of them received an award.
The Company itself was also a finalist for Earthquake Strengthening for work they did on Time Zone in Palmerston North. This is the second time in two years that they have been finalists, having been recognised for work they did on the Sarjeant Art Gallery in 2024. They also won a silver in the Whanganui Business Awards for Manufacturing and Engineering.
Both directors, Jared Davis and Mathew Gaudin, are Whanganui locals, having gone to Whanganui High School and working in other companies in Whanganui before establishing NZ Structural & Engineering. The Company has a staff of eight, including them.
