Such a great service to use. I definitely recommend giving Te Ngaru The Tide a go if you haven’t already! 🙌

Local disability advocate and consultant Sarah Morell, from Access For Success, recently took a ride on Te Ngaru The Tide to see how the bus service worked from the perspective of someone living with a disability.

Sarah says her experiences with public transport have not always been the greatest in the past, especially on bus services in larger cities where she found buses a bit cramped and not particularly accessible. However she was pleasantly surprised by the service in Whanganui.

“The fact that these buses are able to tilt down to the kerb and have a special ramp available for people like me in a wheelchair is really awesome. I also found the bus driver extremely friendly and helpful. The designated spaces for wheelchairs inside the bus were also great!"

Sarah says having an accessible bus service is a great way to provide disabled people with more options and more independence.

“Generally I like to make my own way into town using my motorised wheelchair. However it’s really nice to know that if the weather packs in – or if I’m running a bit low on battery – I have option of taking the bus home. It also gives me the option of traveling further afield independently, meaning I can catch up with friends in Castlecliff more often.”

“Another thing I was pleased to see was that many of the new bus shelters across town now have good weatherproof, wheelchair-friendly facilities. Overall my experience on The Tide has definitely opened me up to catching the bus more often – so I’ll be getting a Bee Card and encouraging other people in my position to give it a try too if they can.”
