Sartorius Muscle

Commonly referred to as the tailor muscle.

The Sartorius is a synergist muscle that works in conjunction with the quadriceps group for thigh flexion, thigh abduction and thigh external rotation. Also the knee joint for leg flexion & leg internal rotation.
It works to assist in movement and stabilisation of both the hip and the knee. The Sartorius is used during everything from walking & jogging to lateral slides & lunges.

The sartorius is the longest muscle in the body and originates from the anterior superior iliac spine and runs obliquely across the upper and anterior part of the thigh, it ends in a tendon which curves anteriorly and inserts into the superomedial surface of the tibia.
(It wraps from the outside of the hip to the inside of the knee)

Frequent use of the Sartorius makes it prone to overuse or injury. Overuse can result in chronic knee pain. Tight hips & hip flexors including a tight Sartorius are common resulting in hip pain & an uneven gait.

Massage is an effective tool in bringing relief to the symptoms associated with a tight Sartorius to reduce hip & knee pain.

Between massage appointments you can find some relief with a foam roller and certain leg stretches.

If you want to train at your optimal level then take care of those muscles and ensure you are having regular massage!

Tensor Fascia Latae 🦵🏽

Commonly referred to as the TFL or fob pocket muscle and translates to “Stretcher of the side band”

The TFL is the prime mover in hip medial rotation and serves as an accessory muscle in abduction and flexion of the hip.
It works to assist in movement and stabilisation of both the hip and the knee.

The TFL is approximately 15cms long and originates from the external iliac crest and runs inferior-laterally to insert into the proximal iliotibal band.
(It runs from the top of the hip & feeds into the IT Band)

Some of the problems that arise when this muscle is tight or shortened are pelvic imbalances that lead to pain in the hips, as well as pain in the lower back and lateral area of the knees.

Direct manual release is very effective in bringing relief to the symptoms associated with a tight TFL.
Instant physical and visual changes are often present immediately after release.

Between massage appointments you can find some relief with a foam roller or spiky ball and certain hip stretches.

If you want to train at your optimal level then take care of those muscles and ensure you are having regular massage!

How often should you have massage?

I get asked this question a lot, and the answer depends greatly on so many things. Your training intensity & frequency, injuries, time, budget etc

Many top athletes will go 2-3 times per week, which isn’t really achievable for most of us.
I recommend weekly if possible, if not fortnightly. Not only keeping the muscles pliable but the regular benefits of stress reduction.

Regular stretching & foam rolling between appointments is also recommended.

In summary as regular as you can, it’s not about waiting for aches & pains to arise. Prevention is better than cure 👍🏼

Massage as part of your regular training routine is similar to leg day......you can’t skip it 😅

You all know massage has benefits to your general health but did you know how effective massage is in accelerating your muscle recovery? Read below ⬇️

Effects on general health & wellbeing:
-Boosts Immune function
-Stimulates the lymphatic system
-Relaxes the mind & body, induces calm
-Increased Joint Mobility/Flexibility
-Improves skin tone & texture
-Heightens mental alertness
-Reduces anxiety & depression
-Decreases cortisol levels

Effects on Muscle Recovery:
-Improves recovery of soft tissue injuries
-Reduces muscle tension
-Helps increase training performance
-Improves flexibility, helping with range of motion
-Relieves pain
-Enhances sleep quality
-Accelerates recovery by reducing mental & physical tension
-Improved circulation. Post training massage can increase blood flow throughout the body for up to 72hours. Increasing nutrient delivery to the muscles.

Your ability to build muscle is directly tied to your recovery.
Variables to your muscle recovery include age, diet, genetics, training intensity frequency & history, injury history, sleep quality, stress levels & protein intake.
Sometimes even with these things at optimum levels you can still feel beat down between training sessions.
Massage Therapy is one form of recovery that is restorative to the body, it will enhance your performance in the gym and enhance your muscle growth due to increased recovery.

Massage Therapy is the secret weapon used by many athletes to keep performance at optimum levels and reduce down time between training sessions.

Hey Everyone

For those I haven’t yet met I’m Amanda,
I am so excited to now be apart of the team , I’m here to make sure your taking the downtime, relaxation & muscle recovery we all know we need but never get around too. We’ve made it easy being based at the gym to get that post work out massage 💆🏻‍♀️ 👍🏼 Non-members absolutely welcome also.

My massage career originated 10+ years ago when I first began in the beauty industry. I have always had a passion for health & wellness, my clients & client care. I branched away from beauty & more toward spa around 6years ago as my love grew for massage. I have worked at several 5star spas here & in Australia.

I currently supervise a small spa team at Kauri Cliffs lodge in the beautiful Matauri Bay 3-4 days a week. So I will be working around that and do my absolute best to work in with what you all need.

I will be available Monday-Thursday, I have no problem working late & will try to get some weekend days in for you where possible which I will be posting on here, so keep an eye out for them as I’m sure that will be a popular time 🙂
