A drive anywhere with me can result in one or two unscheduled stops. The eye of the magpie could see from a distance that this bach had been gutted. I asked the owners and they were surprised. Said I wouldn't find too much. Quite a few lengths of 6x1 matai, some old cedar weatherboards, some oak and mahogany from some furniture, heaps of painted kauri and a few pieces of treasure. I turned the matai and cedar from this salvage into the last pic. Now on display at .nz

Chur chur Tāmaki peeps. I'm coming down to hang at Eyes On Fire gallery Friday and Saturday this week. I would have loved to have run a couple of workshops, but the health and safety aspect of it would be the whole workshop. Weekend workshops are in the pipeline for sure.
I'll be bringing a few power tools and demonstrating a few techniques. I'll be talking about timber upcycling and am only too happy to answer questions or offer advice.

Our rimu has so many tones. It's always been my favourite. Lately though, I've had the pleasure of having some matai and rewarewa in my timber racks. Too good for firewood!

What's next???

I've had a massive year so far, and I'm actually about to turn it up another notch. I have 3 smaller commissions on the go at the moment, but I'm also working towards my Auckland debut✊🏽. July 7th is the opening night for my 1st solo exhibition in Tāmaki Makaurau. If you're in or around Ponsonby, make sure to call in. Chur

It was truly an honour to stand in front of students of Tikipunga High School on Monday and talk to them about my career path. I told them the truth...I was a bit of a s**t bag in my years at Tiki. I was a mischief when I left school. I had no idea, and no real care about my future. I was living in the now, and all I wanted to do then, was alter my mind with whatever was on offer. I stood in front of a judge and jail time was discussed. The turning point! I changed s**t! New environment, an apprenticeship and I wasn't going to trip over anything behind me. Whatever I chose to do from that point on, I was gonna do my best. Cheers for organizing this.

Today, I hung and unveiled Te Kahu Atawhai for the NDHB Emergency Department. My 1st big unveil was a bit overwhelming to be honest. Luckily, me old school mate Lisa was there and she welcomed me with a beautiful mihimihi. It was truly an honour to produce this taonga for the team that stitched my fingers back on a year ago last week. Ngā mihi nui Pip, Lisa, Mike and your team and colleagues.

The brief given by the NDHB ED team...a piece that represents Te Kahu Atawhai - literally meaning - a blanket of kindness, compassion and love. The piece needs to encompass their core values - manaakitanga, whakamana, tika me pono, wairua, whanaungatanga, aroha and kaitiakitanga.

🤔🤔🤔...would you like fries with that?

It's difficult to know the quantity of pieces needed for a piece because I don't really know what I'm creating. I prep hundreds of pieces and then just let it happen. The second to last pic is for a commission and the last pic is of a piece that's made up of the pieces left on the bench. Both pieces happened from just having a tutu.

Hundreds of little pieces needed for the next commission piece, to be unveiled next week at Whangārei Base Hospital. Matai, rimu, kauri, rewarewa, tawa, totara, cedar, pine, mahogany, kwila, jarrah, larch, spruce, purple heart, Japanese cedar, abodo. Diversity and inclusiveness...part of the brief.

It may be pi***ng down with heavy rain, but I'm making sunshine.

Had these whopper doors under wraps this year too. 1.35m wide per door for this cool as whanau of 5. The guts is cedar and aluminum, wrapped in cedar, with rimu and totara circles🖐🏽. I've had the coolest start to the year team. I love what I do👌🏽

Mission Springs Flat:
An outdoor bench top/bar leaner. 4.2M long and 650mm wide. Native or exotic timber. Something no one else has. Unique in every way.

I knew there was purpose for all these little pieces I've saved over the years. Looking forward to finishing this one.

These pieces are a by-product of the bigger pieces or left overs of my furniture pieces. I just cut them to length and throw them in a box. When I have 3 or 4 boxes full, my darling and I just make them up as we go. Out on the deck...wine...ginger beer...and a 1.5 litre PVA😛 Message me at Journey Studio if you'd like me to package you up your very own DIY piece. You'll have more than enough pieces of contrasting colored timbers pre-cut and a sheet of ply cut to your dimensions and marked with grid lines. Create your own masterpiece
