While carrying out the Problem-Solving strategy (see previous posts), it is necessary to use Effective Speaking and Listening skills. The manner in which the speaker shares information will determine its effectiveness. Is the message you intended to send equal to the message received by the listener? Both verbal and non-verbal communications are involved. Words are only a small part of our total communication. Facial expressions, gestures, posture, and voice quality are key components of non-verbal communication. Even when we remain silent, we are communicating.

When speaking: 1- Focus on one issue rather than multiple issues. 2- Address the problem or behaviour rather than the person. 3- Be specific and avoid making generalisations. 4- Express your feelings respectfully, do not judge or criticize and use “I statements” rather than “You statements”. 5- Observe the facts of the situation and aim for mutual understanding.

Example of an “I statement”: “I feel humiliated when you criticize me in front of my friends.”
Example of a “You statement”: “You always criticize me in front of my friends!”

The last stage of the Problem-Solving strategy (see previous posts) is acting on the chosen solution plan. This may involve sorting obstacles, calming emotions, and restructuring thinking (see previous posts on distorted thinking and CBT). The next stage (see below) involves communicating effectively by taking turns to speak and listen and understand all facts, emotions and thoughts. Bear in mind that some thoughts may be distorted/irrational and need restructuring. Also, what are any obstacles that may prevent solving the problem? What are goals to be achieved?

Let’s start an exercise. Think of a current disagreement you have within your family, or a problem you are finding it difficult to solve. Apply stages 1 (see previous post) and 2 (see below) of the problem-solving strategy to begin the process of resolving the problem. How do you and your partner/friend/family resolve conflicts now? Does your style need changing? How much time, energy and commitment will be necessary to resolve the difficulty?
