I have fond memories of watching my nana in our family kitchen peeling broad beans from their pods, her hands are covered in wrinkles and I see her swaying in beat to an unheard song. This memory probably took place around Christmas or a special occasion such as a family gathering and no doubt my mum was there too, frantically rushing around my nana in attempt to pull off yet another delicious home-cooked family meal. The memories that we carry around foods give them a special almost sacred quality and have the ability to transport us in time. Broad beans for me is one of those foods.

After a much needed social media hiatus, I have a beautifully crafted broad bean salad recipe up on the blog today. Perfect one for the Christmas menu. Enjoy x

“It is my trade," he said. "I work for the bean family, and every day there are deaths among the beans, mostly from thirst. They shrivel and die, they go blind in their one black eye, and I put them in one of these tiny coffins. Beans, you know, are beautifully shaped, like a new church, l

We had an ample supply of lemons this year and I just couldn’t bear the thought of wasting a single one of them. Through the season I have been keeping on top of the excess lemons by freezing them into ice cubes, a great way to have lemon juice throughout the year. You can also preserve the skins for all those zesty cake and salad recipes you might have going on throughout the seasons

This week I’ve noticed a lot of clients coming into the clinic with health problems linked into environmental toxins. Environmental toxins are something that many of us are exposed to on a daily basis and something that’s become increasingly present in our modern day environment. Toxins may appear in substances such as plastics, exhaust fumes, body products, processed meats, house dust, drinking water and foods.

While it’s almost impossible to eliminate all exposure to toxins, you can increase your awareness of what you’re potentially being exposed to. For anyone interested in committing to some serious toxin elimination in your life or to simply educate yourself further, I recommend the book ‘Healthy home, healthy family’ written by Nicole Bijlsma. The book covers in detail different forms of toxins and ways to limit your exposure. Alternatively if you are interested in learning more about how toxins may be affecting your health, I offer nutritional consultations and functional testing around toxin exposure. Happy Thursday everyone!

This week I realised that it had been weeks since I had taken a day off work and long overdue for a bit of down time and a good old hit of creativity.. so I cosied up into the most sunniest and comfiest spots in the house, put a record on and made a few watercolours. So here is one of many in ode to the apple. And just because I cant help myself, some delightful information all about the dear apple.

Apples are extremely rich in important antioxidants, flavanoids, and dietary fiber. They are a great source of pectin which helps to lower cholesterol naturally and has been said to help lower blood glucose levels. Make sure you keep the skin on because all the vitamins and nutrients are found in there

I am excited to announce that I have joined forces with the amazing team of holistic practitioners at True You Wellness in Whangarei and am available in clinic and online for nutritional consultations 🙌🏼 I have also been busy creating tasty winter salads with one of my favourite vegetables, the beetroot.

Beetroot is a good source of vitamin C, iron, folate and magnesium. It is also a great source of dietary fibre. The intense red colour of beetroot is due to betacyanin which is an antioxidant that is important for a healthy heart. Beetroots have phytonutrient properties and have powerful anti-inflammatory effects. If you are an athlete or you’re looking to enhance your athletic performance, reach for this root vegetable as they are a great source of nitrates which help to improve the use of energy in our bodies and increase circulation and vasodilation. “She danced, and as she danced, she tried to think of the most delicious salads she could imagine, with artichokes and sundried tomato and blue cheese dressing, and beets, lots of beets.” - Nicholson Baker
