"धात्रीफलं सदा पथ्यं " --- आंवला उम्र को धारण करता है इसलिए धात्री फल कहा गया है और सर्वदा खाने योग्य है !

आयुर्वेद में आँवला को अमृतफल कहा गया है और इसे रसायन की श्रेणी में रखा गया है। रसायन उस गुणकारी द्रव्य को कहते हैं, जो सभी काल में सभी जगह और प्राणिमात्र के लिये, आजीवन लाभदायक सिद्ध हो तथा जो शरीर के प्रत्येक अंगको नवशक्ति प्रदान करता हो, समस्त रोगोंको दूर करनेकी शक्ति रखता हो, साथ ही उत्तम एवं सुदृढ़ स्वास्थ्य, लम्बी आयु प्रदान करनेकी क्षमता रखता हो।

इसी न्याय से आँवला का एक नाम 'धात्री-फल' भी है। अर्थात् जो फल मनुष्य को धाय की तरह पालन पोषण करे, उस फल को धात्री फल तो कहा जायेगा ही। संस्कृत में आँवला को आमलक, धानी फल, वयस्था, पंचरसा तथा तृष्यफला आदि कहते हैं.

जंगली आँवला के कुछ पेड़ों में बड़े फल लगते हैं, और कुछ में छोटे परन्तु वे सभी रेशेदार, बड़ी गुठली वाले और कम गूदावाले होते हैं। इन आंवलों को आम बोलचाल में अँवरी या कठ अँवरा कहते हैं। इन जंगली आँवलों को आयुर्वेदीय ग्रन्थों में काष्ठधात्री, क्षुद्रामलक, तथा कर्कट आदि नाम दिये गये हैं।

Tradicionalmente, el árbol de Amla se considera como una deidad, vishnu, se cree que habita en él. El árbol de esta fruta exótica se ha utilizado como el árbol para lograr la iluminación. El fruto es de suma importancia en la mitología hindú.

De acuerdo con el Ayurveda, la fruta Amla se considera una comida casi perfecta, ya que posee cinco rasas de cada seis.

La otra historia del origen de Amla: los dioses y los demonios se pelearon después de la ksheera sagar manthan, que provocó que se derramaran accidentalmente gotas de Amrit en la tierra. Estas gotas llevaron a la creación de Amla. Aquí es donde Amla obtiene su conexión con la religión y también su asociación con la buena salud en general, junto con el aumento de la longevidad de la vida.

Amla se utiliza popularmente como Murabba, Pickle, preparación ayurvédica (solo y junto con otras hierbas), cosméticos naturales y ayurvédicos, dulces, pasta, en tintas, champús y aceites para el cabello. El alto contenido de taninos de la fruta Amla sirve como mordiente para la fijación. Tintes en telas. Los champús y los aceites para el cabello de Amla se creen tradicionalmente para nutrir el cabello y ayudan a prevenir el envejecimiento prematuro del cabello.

Amla tiene más de 12 variedades hasta el momento. Su producción comercial comenzó desde Pratapgrah UP, un distrito central entre Ayodhya-Kashi -Prayag, a finales de los diecisiete (1970), las pocas variedades comunes son: Chakla, Kanchan (NA-5), NA- 7, NA-10, NA-4, NA-6, etc.

The other story of Amla’s origin- Gods and Demons got in to a fight after the ksheera sagar manthan, which resulted in drops of Amrit being spilled on earth accidentally. These drops led to the creation of Amla. This is where amla get its connect with religion and also its association with general good health along with boosting longevity of life.

Amla is popularly used as Murabba , Pickle , Ayurvedic preparation (alone and along with other herbs) ,Natural and Ayurvedic Cosmetics, candies , Paste , in inks, shampoos and hair oils, the high tannin content of Amla fruit serves as a mordant for fixing dyes in fabrics. Amla shampoos and hair oils are traditionally believed to nourish the hair and helps in preventing premature greying of hair.

Amla has over 12 varities so far , Its commercial production started from Pratapgrah U.P , a center district between Ayodhya-Kashi -Prayag , in late seventees (1970) , the few common varieties are - Chakla, Kanchan (NA-5) , NA-7,NA-10 , NA-4, NA-6 etc
