This deadly fungus can fight cancer — and shows promise against leukemia.

A fungus once blamed for a deadly “pharaoh’s curse” may soon help save lives. Aspergillus flavus — the mold suspected of killing several archaeologists who opened Tutankhamun’s tomb in the 1920s — has now been found to produce molecules with powerful anticancer properties.

In a study published in Nature Chemical Biology, researchers identified four new compounds, called asperigimycins, extracted from the fungus.

When tested on human leukemia cells, two showed strong cancer-fighting effects — matching the potency of existing chemotherapy drugs, but without their toxic side effects when paired with lipids.

Though A. flavus is typically feared for contaminating food and causing deadly infections, it now joins a long list of microbes that have yielded breakthrough medicines. The asperigimycins belong to a rare class of compounds known as RiPPs — complex peptides that are difficult to detect and even harder to isolate. Scientists believe these hidden molecules may be an untapped goldmine for drug discovery. With further testing in animals and, potentially, humans, a fungus once seen as a curse may become a powerful tool in the fight against leukemia.

"" 🚨BREAKING NEWS: A man was just cured of sickle cell anemia!

A 21-year-old man just became the first person in New York to be cured of sickle cell anemia, marking a major breakthrough in the treatment of a disease that has afflicted millions globally.

Sebastien Beauzile underwent a groundbreaking gene therapy at Cohen Children’s Medical Center using Lyfgenia, a treatment that modifies a patient’s own bone marrow stem cells to produce healthy red blood cells.

The result: a life without the excruciating pain and complications that once defined his daily existence. “Sickle cell was like a blockade,” Beauzile said. “But now it’s just a wall I jumped over.”

Traditionally, sickle cell treatments have focused on managing symptoms, offering no true cure. Lyfgenia changes that paradigm. While it remains costly and complex, this one-time therapy is poised to transform outcomes for patients, especially within communities historically underrepresented in medical innovation.

The condition primarily impacts individuals of African, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern descent, and researchers hope this success story will pave the way for broader access and future cures.

For the first time, gene therapy is not just experimental. It’s life-changing.

The photograph showing a patient’s hand clasped between two water-filled surgical gloves became a powerful global symbol of the compassion and ingenuity of healthcare workers during the intense isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. The original image originated from a hospital in Brazil, where nurses devised the technique to comfort isolated and often intubated patients.
Known locally as the "maozinha do amor" or "little hands of love," the innovation involved filling two disposable latex gloves with warm water and tying them off before placing one on each side of the patient’s hand. The primary purpose of the gesture was to mimic the impossible human touch—the sensation of holding a loved one's hand—providing essential emotional support to those confined and lonely in isolation wards.
The nurses, including Semei Araújo Cunha, also noted that the warm water had a tangible physical benefit: it helped soften cold extremities and increase blood flow. This improved circulation was medically important as it could prevent falsely low readings on blood oxygen level monitors caused by cold hands.
The technique gained rapid praise and was adopted by hospitals worldwide as a form of humanizing care during a global health crisis that necessitated extreme physical separation. It demonstrated how simple, yet profoundly empathetic, solutions could alleviate the immense stress and loneliness experienced by patients separated from their families.

A 2025 Science Advances study found that in rat models of stroke, DMT reduced brain swelling and infarct size while preserving blood-brain barrier integrity and dampening inflammation. The researchers traced these effects to actions on Sigma-1 receptors, which help regulate cellular stress responses after injury. While this work is still preclinical, it suggests DMT could one day become a supplemental therapy to enhance stroke recovery.
